Buccaneers fall in both games on final day of JU/UNF Spring Break Challenge

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Charleston Southern was unable to overcome Georgetown and host Jacksonville on the final day of the JU/UNF Spring Break Classic as the Buccaneers fell in both games on Sunday at the Pruitt Softball Complex.

The Bucs (6-21) fell in the early morning contest to the Hoyas, 3-1, and were unable to hold off the host Dolphins in the afternoon weekend finale, 8-0.

Game One: Georgetown 3, Charleston Southern 1
Georgetown put up three runs in the top of the first and held off a late CSU comeback attempt to claim the win on Sunday morning in Jacksonville.

Annie Bakenhus recorded her third multi-hit game in a row as the senior left fielder was 2-for-4 from the plate with the Bucs' lone RBI. Sarah Brown added a double among CSU's five hits in the contest.

Arizona Pilgrim went 5.2 innings in relief for the Bucs with the senior right-hander allowing just two hits while striking out six. Holly Clark (2-8) suffered the loss in the circle after surrendering a difficult first inning.

Sarah Bennett was the difference maker at the plate for Georgetown going 1-for-3 with a two-run double. Noelle Holiday added a 2-for-3 game from the plate.

Anna Brooks Pacha (1-4) went the distance for the Hoyas surrendering five hits and one run while striking out five.

How They Scored

  • Holiday brought home the first run of the game with an RBI single up the middle scoring Macy Cartwright in the top of the first.
  • Bennett's two-run double in the frame brought home Alexa Dolby and Mae Forshey to put the Hoyas ahead 3-0 before Pilgrim retired the final two batters on strikes to escape the jam.
  • CSU left six runners on base before cracking the scoreboard in the top of the fifth as Annie Bakenhus' single to right field scored Meghan Gagliano.

Game Two: Jacksonville 8, Charleston Southern 0 (6 inn.)
The Buccaneers were unable to crack the scoreboard against JU pitcher Alyssa Bilodeau (5-5) and the Dolphins were aided by an Abby Genest third-inning grand slam in taking home the win over CSU.

Annie Bakenhus, Jade Gandara, and Caitlyn Emberson all singled for the Bucs in the contest as CSU struggled to string together base runners against the Dolphins. Sarah Brown and Brooklynn Brewington reached on walks to help supplement the CSU offensive attack.

Alyssa Heinrich (1-3) went the distance in the loss as the sophomore surrendered 11 hits and eight runs while striking out three.

Hannah Roberts (3-for-4) and Genest (2-of-3, five RBI) paced the Dolphins offense in the game as seven players recorded hits in the contest. Bilodeau surrendered three hits and posted six strikeouts in the circle for JU.

How They Scored

  • Genest's grand slam highlighted the five-run Dolphins third inning as Jacksonville took the early lead over the Buccaneers.
  • Victoria Rodebaugh (sacrifice fly) and Carolyn O'Neal (single) added RBI in the fifth inning to stretch the Dolphins' lead to 7-0.
  • Genest capped the contest with a walk-off RBI single scoring Haley Holloway in the sixth.

  • Charleston Southern wrapped up tournament play on Sunday afternoon as the Buccaneers now turn their focus toward the 2019 Big South conference schedule.
  • Twenty-four of CSU's next 26 games come against conference competition starting on Friday, March 15, against Radford.
