East Lansing, Mich. – The third-ranked Michigan State Spartans used a strong shooting performance Monday night to down the Charleston Southern men's basketball team 94-46 from the Breslin Center.
The Bucs (1-4) saw a team-high 15 points from
Dontrell Shuler in the loss while No. 3 Michigan State (3-1) used four players in double figures led by Xavier Tillman's 21 points and nine rebounds.
The loss Monday concludes a 48-hour trip to Dayton and Michigan State to kick off the Maui on the Mainland games where the Bucs will also play Southern Utah and either ETSU or Delaware State in the finale next Saturday and Sunday in Johnson City, Tenn.
Michigan State assisted on 31 of their 36 baskets Monday night led by Cassius Winston's eight. Shuler dished out four to lead the Bucs and freshman guard
Malik Battle poured-in a career-high 11 points just two nights after racking-up nine at Dayton.
How It Happened
- Dontrell Shuler splashed home an elbow jumper to put the Bucs on the board first.
- Michigan State responded to shoot over 45% in the opening half scoring 14 of their 40 points in transition and assisting on 13 of their 14 baskets.
- Shuler paced the Bucs again at the break with seven points picking up where he left off Saturday night and Cassius Winston led all with nine
- Sadarius Bowser provided a bucket out of the break to put the Bucs on the board first once again
- Shuler added eight second half points to lead the Bucs in scoring again with 15 on the night

- Monday's matchup marked the first time CSU played a top-5 opponent in program history
- It was the second time playing a ranked team in as many seasons taking on Furman last season and the third time playing in the state of Michigan – all coming since the 1996-97 season
