Bucs drop series opener to Campbell on Friday afternoon

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Campbell's bats powered their way past Charleston Southern on Friday afternoon at the CSU Softball Field as the Buccaneers fell, 15-3, in the Big South series opener between the two teams.

CSU (25-22, 6-7) surrendered five home runs and six extra-base hits to the Camels (19-23, 7-9) in dropping the conference contest at home. Caitlyn Emberson connected on a solo home run for the Bucs in the loss.

Arizona Pilgrim (8-10) suffered the loss in the circle for CSU going the first 1.1 innings and allowing six runs on three hits while walking four. Holly Clark went the rest of the way for CSU.

Megan Richards (13-9) recorded the complete game win for the Camels allowing five hits and three runs while striking out six.

Sarah Brown and Taylor Gleason both connected on doubles for the Bucs, while Jade Gandara brought home the first CSU run with an RBI single in the bottom of the third to keep her hitting streak alive.

Rachel McCollum and Lizabeth McCurry connected on a pair of two-run home runs in the top of the first to stake Campbell to the early lead. Caroline Smith added an RBI single and Madison Herring drilled a three-run home run to put the Camels ahead 8-0 after two innings.

Gleason's double short-hopped the right field fence to open the Bucs' at-bats in the bottom of the third. After Caitlyn Emberson's groundout moved her to third, Gandara bounced a single over the third baseman into left field for CSU's first run of the game.

McCurry added Campbell's ninth run of the game with an RBI scoring Smith in the top of the fourth.

Madison Koger brought home CSU's second run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Brown led off the inning with a double to left centerfield. She stole third and then scored on Koger's fielder's choice to cut the deficit to 9-2.

Emberson added CSU's third run of the contest in the bottom of the fifth. The junior first baseman drilled the one out, 1-2 offering from Richards over the fence in left centerfield for her seventh home run of the season.

Campbell closed out the contest in the top of the sixth as Wancheck and Smith both homered in the six-run inning.

The Bucs were retired in order to finish the game.

News & Notes

  • Brown's stolen base in the bottom of the fourth inning was CSU's 92nd this season, tying the single-season program record established in 1993.
  • Emberson's home run tied her for third on the team in 2018 with Brown and was the 27th home run of her career at CSU.
  • Campbell's five home runs was the second time in three games opponents have hit five home runs in a game against the Bucs. Furman accomplished the feat in the first game of the doubleheader on April 11.
