LONG BEACH, Calif. - Charleston Southern suffered losses against
UC Santa Barbara and Long Beach State on the second day of the Long
Beach State Mayfair Invitational, dropping their first game to the
Gauchos 12-0, while falling to the host 49ers in the nightcap,
6-1.
Charleston Southern falls to 4-14 overall on the season with the
pair of losses.
Charleston Southern continues play this weekend tomorrow
afternoon, taking on Idaho State at noon Eastern Time, and wrap up
the day taking on UCLA, with the start time adjusted to begin at
6:45 Eastern Time.

Shelby Wisdom hurled a four-hitter as Charleston Southern fell
in the opener on Saturday evening at the Mayfair Invitational to UC
Santa Barbara, 12-0.
Marci Christian and Linzy Rother both had doubles for the
Buccaneers in the loss, while Trea Steele and Natalie Yonan added
singles.
Wisdom (10-4) had a standout day from the plate in addition to
her time on the mound, going a perfect 4-for-4 with six RBI,
including two doubles and one triple, while throwing a complete
game. She recorded eight strikeouts to two walks in the win.
Jennifer Giles (1-11) suffered the loss, throwing 1.1 innings in
allowing seven runs in the game. Rother pitched 3.1 innings in
relief, allowing five runs (two earned), while striking out
four.
UCSB scored in all five innings in the contest, playing three
runs in the first, four in the second, two in both the third and
fourth frames and one in the fifth.
The Buccaneers threatened to score in both the fourth and fifth
innings, with Rother moving Jana Matthews to third base in the
fourth inning with a two-out double, while CSU loaded the bases
with two outs in the fifth inning, but Wisdom escaped both jams to
keep the shutout intact.

Host Long Beach State jumped ahead in the bottom of the first
inning and held off the Buccaneers late in recording the 6-1
victory in the nightcap of the Mayfair Invitational.
Amanda Hansen (2-0) went six innings, allowing a lone unearned
run with seven strikeouts, while Selene Pola pitched a perfect
inning in relief.
Linzy Rother (2-3) suffered her third loss of the season,
allowing three runs and two hits, with all five batters she faced
reaching base. Jennifer Giles pitched six innings in relief,
scattering five hits and three runs.
Trea Steele led the Buccaneers with a double and RBI in the
game, while Hayes Holdsworth and Jana Matthews also had hits for
CSU in the loss.
Karli Sandoval had a home run for the 49ers in the win, while
Shayna Kimbrough led all players with two hits and two stolen bases
in the game.
The Buccaneers plated their lone run in the top of the fifth
inning as Natalie Yonan led off the frame reaching on a fielding
error. Steele connected on a double to left field, scoring Yonan
from first to bring the Bucs back to within 3-1, but the Long Beach
State pitching staff retired the final nine Charleston Southern
batters in a row to close out the win.
