CHARLESTON, S.C. - Jennifer Giles and Morgan Dowdy combined to
strike out ten batters and Jana Matthews blasted her 22nd career
home run to lead the Charleston Southern softball team (25-19, 10-5
BSC) past Big South foe Campbell 5-0 at Buccaneer Field on
Saturday.
Giles got the start for the Buccaneers, giving up four hits
without surrendering a run while striking out five batters in just
over five innings. Dowdy pitched the final 1.2 innings in relief,
also striking out five.
Melissa Adams singled to center field in the bottom of the
first, making it home when Linzy Rother (2-for-2, RBI) doubled to
left field to put the Bucs up 1-0.
Campbell (21-24, 6-6 BSC) was able to load the bases in the top
of the third, but couldn't make it to home plate. Christina Melton
singled to center field, but was caught stealing. Kerstine Womack
had a base hit before Ericka Nesbitt walked. Stephanie Jones then
took first base after bring hit by a pitch to load the bases.
However, Giles would come through big as Raven Lee went down
swinging to end the inning.
Jessica Brock then doubled to left field in the bottom of the
third to get on base. She was then out at third on a fielder's
choice that put Megan Lombard on first. Matthews (1-for-3, run, 2
RBI) belted her third home run of the season to left field to push
the Buccaneers ahead 3-0 after three innings.
The Bucs would add a few more in the bottom of the sixth.
Stephanie Sbardella singled to center field, scoring on a single by
Jasmine Conley. Ari Tedesco followed that up with another single
before Kristin Kelleher was drilled by a pitch to load the bases.
Brock was also hit, collecting the RBI when Conley crossed home
plate to give the Bucs the 5-0 win.
Brittany Arnn took the loss for the Camels, going 2.2 innings
with five hits and three runs (two earned). Olivia Scarborough
gave up two runs on four hits in the next 3.0 innings before Julia
Callicut came in to face the final batter.
The Bucs will host cross-town rival the College of Charleston on
Wednesday at Buccaneer Field. First pitch of the doubleheader is
slated for 2 p.m.
