LONG BEACH, CA. - Kellie Fox and Danny Yudin each drove in three
runs to highlight UCLA's 12-hit outburst as the Bruins downed CSU,
9-1, in five innings, on Saturday night at the Long Beach State
Invitational.
CSU (10-10) loaded the bases in the first inning against UCLA
starter Jessica Hall, but could not punch through on the
scoreboard. Katie Schroeder made sure the Bruins would get off on
the right foot, as she smoked a home run over the right field wall
to begin the bottom of the first. UCLA would add another run for a
2-0 lead on a Yudin RBI single.
The Bucs struck for a two-out run to draw within a single tally
in the second, as Melissa Adams singled and raced home a batter
later when Megan Lombard drilled an opposite field triple.
CSU was still within striking distance even after UCLA tacked on
two more runs in the third, but the Bruins ended the contest early
with a five-run fifth frame. UCLA loaded the bases against CSU
starter Morgan Dowdy (6-5) and then cleared them on Fox's three-run
double to right field off reliever Linzy Rother. Fox then scored on
a passed ball, and the Bruins accounted for the final outcome with
another score on an error.
Dowdy took the loss for CSU after allowing the seven runs on 10
hits and four walks over 4.0 innings. The junior right-hander did
manage to strike out three.
CSU wraps up its play in the Long Beach State Invitational with
a pair of games on Sunday. The Bucs will square off against Notre
Dame at 1:30 p.m., before meeting host Long Beach State at
6:45.
