CHARLESTON, S.C. - Mathiang Muo matched a program record with
eight three-pointers en route to a career-high 26 points as
Charleston Southern upended High Point, 70-67, at Buccaneer
Fieldhouse on Saturday evening.
CSU (15-10, 9-6) set season-highs in threes made (14) and
attempted (39) to end a three-game losing streak and improve to
10-2 at the Buc Dome this year.
"With the way we lost two nights ago, and having to deal with so
much adversity here lately, this was clearly the biggest win of the
season," said CSU coach Barclay Radebaugh, referring to Thursday
night's one-point loss to Liberty on a buzzer beating
three-pointer. "We talked on Friday about how life is so much
bigger than basketball and we needed to keep things in perspective.
I told them if they keep playing with the effort they have played
with all season, good things will happen. It's mid-February.
Everyone in college basketball is tired now. We're a mentally and
physically exhausted basketball team but winning sure helps you
recover a little quicker."
The Bucs appeared poised to pull away when Muo's eighth and
final trey sailed through the net with 5:17 remaining to cap an
11-1 run for a 68-55 lead at the 5:17 mark. High Point (10-16,
6-10) responded with 12 straight markers, though, to make CSU sweat
out a second consecutive contest to the final buzzer.
Shay Shine and Nick Barbour keyed the spurt, as the Panthers
held the Bucs without a field goal the rest of the way. Shine
started the charge with a pair of free throws, and swished two
triples to make the score 68-64 with 1:40 remaining. Barbour had
been quieted after turning his ankle early in the second stanza,
but buried a clutch three from the right wing to close the tally to
68-67 with 1:00 left. Following an Arlon Harper miss, High Point
had the basketball with a chance to take the lead, but Barbour's
three clanged off the iron and Shine stepped out of bounds after
pulling down the offensive rebound. Muo came free on the ensuing
inbounds play and was fouled, and then connected on two free throws
to up the CSU advantage to 70-67. Shine made a bid for overtime,
but his three went begging and Kelvin Martin secured the board to
allow the Bucs to escape with a victory.
Barbour finished with 21 points to pace the Panthers, and in the
process became just the seventh player in Big South history to
total 2,000 career points. Shine chipped in 18 as he and Barbour
combined to go 10-of-22 from downtown.
For CSU, Martin posted his second straight double-double and
ninth of the campaign with 11 points and 13 rebounds - five of
which came on the offensive end. Paul Gombwer also skied for five
offensive caroms to aid a Bucs effort which produced a 21-8
advantage in second chance points. Harper, meanwhile, joined Muo
and Martin in double figures with 14 points. The freshman guard
also complimented his scoring with five assists.
High Point led for nearly the entirety of the first half and
built a 21-13 cushion on three Barbour free throws with 12:36
remaining. CSU answered back by turning up the defensive pressure
to hold HPU without a field goal for 7:07 during an 11-2 run which
vaulted them in front, 24-23, on a Jeremy Sexton jumper.
The lead changed hands two more times before intermission, and
Muo forced the lone tie of the night with his fifth trey of the
first half at the 51 second mark. High Point took a 41-39 advantage
into halftime, however, as Devante Wallace connected for the final
bucket of the opening stanza.
Another strong stretch of defense was crucial to the Bucs
ability to open up a 13-point lead in the second half, as they
limited the Panthers to no field goals for a 6:35 span. That was
enough for CSU to withstand HPU's comeback bid, along with Muo's
pressure free throws and two well-contested three-point tries.
CSU welcomes Gardner-Webb to the Buc Dome on Tuesday at 7:30 in
the third of a four-game homestand. The Runnin' Bulldogs edged the
Bucs, 80-77, in Boiling Springs on January 10.
