CHARLESTON, S.C. - For the second time this season, Charleston
Southern men's basketball stalwarts Kelvin Martin and Saah Nimley
have been recognized by the Big South Conference for their stellar
play. Martin was named Co-Choice Hotels Big South Player of the
Week, while Nimley took home Crons Brand Big South Freshman of the
Week Honors, the league announced Monday.
Martin becomes the first player to earn the distinction two
times this year, having already received the honor on December
19th.
The senior forward helped the Bucs end the pre-Christmas slate
on a high note against Stetson, posting 16 points, 8 rebounds, and
a crucial steal and block late to seal the 88-81 road victory. He
was even better against Erskine and Liberty, registering
back-to-back double-doubles as CSU improved to 9-4. Martin reached
a milestone in each contest, as he entered the Big South's top-ten
in career rebounds against the Flying Fleet, and then ripped down
12 more boards versus the Flames to become the ninth player in
league history to go over 800 career caroms.
Over the three-game stretch, Martin averaged 17.3 points on an
efficient 21-of-31 (67.7%) shooting and also contributed 10.0
rebounds, two assists, and 1.7 steals and blocks per night.
Presbyterian's Al'Lonzo Coleman shared the award with Martin after
helping the Blue Hose to a 3-1 mark with averages of 19.5 points,
7.8 rebounds, and 2.0 steals.
Nimley book-ended his three-game stretch with a pair of 23-point
efforts in wins over Stetson and Liberty. The 5-8 point guard was
sensational against the Hatters, leading the Bucs back from an
11-point first half deficit with 23 points and a career-high 12
assists for his first ever double-double. After a 12-point night in
the 96-69 win versus Erskine, Nimley helped engineer CSU's first
win in Lynchburg since 2005-2006 by dropping 17 of his game-high 23
in the second half. Nimley was particularly good from the
free-throw line, drilling 15-of-17 as the Bucs held off a late
Liberty charge.
Nimley had previously been named Crons Brand Big South Freshman
of the Week on December 5th after leading CSU to home victories
over Radford and VMI.
CSU aims to surpass their road win total from a season ago when
they meet High Point tonight at 7 p.m. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.,
with coverage beginning at 6:50 on 106.3 WJNI FM. The game can also
be viewed live online via the Big South Network presented by State
