ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Drew Woodall hit a bases-clearing double in the second inning to drive home a career-high three runs, but the Charleston Southern baseball team was unable to hold onto the lead as the Buccaneers fell 4-3 to University of North Carolina Asheville Saturday afternoon at McCormick Field.

CSU (17-33, 6-16 Big South) took a 3-2 advantage into the ninth inning, but the Bulldogs (14-32, 7-16 Big South) were able to load the bases and walk home the game-winning run with just one out to earn the victory.

The loss for Charleston Southern moves the team a half game behind UNC Asheville for the eighth and final spot in the Big South Conference postseason tournament, which will begin May 25.

Tyler Thornburg pitched his second complete game of the season and struck out double-digit batters for the fourth time this year, but the anemic CSU offense could only muster three hits to six from the Bulldogs.

Thornburg allowed just one extra-base hit in the dominating effort, and only allowed two walks until the final frame.

Neither team scored in the first, and UNCA was able to record the first two outs of the inning before CSU took control. Walt Quattlebaum, Harrison Wilkins and Brandon McKinney all walked to load the bases for Woodall. The CSU backstop drove a bases-clearing double to left field, and the Buccaneers were on the board with a 3-0 lead.

Jordan Lurie singled in the home half of the third. He stole second base, advanced to third on a balk and scored on a wild pitch to cut the Charleston Southern lead to 3-1.

Justin Schumer hit his seventh home run of the season in the fourth, and the lead was cut in half.

The Buccaneers got out of four-straight innings unscathed, and then the wheels came off for Thornburg in the ninth.

He loaded the bases on three-consecutive singles, and then Danny Baatz scored on a fielder's choice. Thornburg then walked C.A. Clayton to bring home Schumer for the game-winning run.

Woodall's hit in the second inning was the last glimmer of hope offensively for CSU, as 22 of the last 24 Bucs were sat down.

Woodall, Brantley Meier and Derek Smith recorded the lone hits for Charleston Southern, and Quattlebaum, Wilkins and McKinney all scored for CSU.

Thornburg (5-4) threw all 8 1/3 innings, and gave up four runs on six hits. He struck out 10 and walked four.

Schumer led the way for UNC Asheville with his 2-for-4 performance. He also drove home a run and scored twice.

He pitched eight innings and earned a no-decision after allowing three runs on three hits. He also struck out four and walked three. Drew Spear (3-4) came on and earned the win after throwing a scoreless ninth.

The series finale is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start May 16. The winner will have the inside track for a berth in the postseason conference tournament with just one more weekend of league play remaining.
