CLINTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern took a doubleheader sweep
over the Presbyterian Blue Hose, with 1-0 and 11-1 wins Friday, at
the PC Softball Complex. Sondra Vetter threw a complete game
shutout in game one, with Megan Hall providing the only run of the
game with a homerun in the first. The Bucs poured on 14 hits in
game two, including a pair of homeruns en route to a run rule win.
With the wins CSU improved to 19-19-1 with a 3-4 mark in the Big
South, while PC dropped to 13-11 and 1-6 in league play.
Hall paced the offense for the Bucs, recording four hits, three
runs scored and a homerun. Both Megans had mirrored numbers, with
Megan Lombard also tallying four hits, three runs scored and a
homerun. Shayla Cullum had some clutch hitting, with three hits,

In game one, CSU lit up the scoreboard in the first, using a Hall
homerun to take a quick lead. No one else managed a hit in the top
as the first, but the Bucs took a 1-0 advantage that would prove to
be the difference.
Vetter started in the circle for CSU, getting out of a jam in the
first and stranding two on base. After the lead runner was hit by
a pitch in the bottom of the second, Vetter got out of another jam,
using two strikeouts in the inning.
CSU had two runners on base in the second, third and fifth innings,
but couldn't manage any runs. Kelleher had a pair of singles in
the second and fourth, before strikeouts would end each scoring
opportunity. The Bucs again had runners on first and second in the
fifth, after a Lombard single, but CSU grounded out in to a double
play for another empty inning.
PC had similar problems, stranding twelve on base for the game.
Vetter allowed two walks and hit five batters, but scattered just
five hits in that time. The Blue Hose had runners in scoring
position in all seven innings, but came up blank for the game. CSU
held on in the bottom of the seventh, despite a one out double, to
take a 1-0 win.
Vetter picked up the win to improve to 6-10, after throwing a
complete game shutout and allowing five hits. Leslie Hensley took
the tough luck loss to drop to 4-6, after allowing four hits and
one earned run.
Game One Box
CSU got the offense going early and often in game two, posting
three runs on two hits in the top of the first. Mary Gordon got PC
in trouble early on, giving up two walks and two hits to start the
game, for one Buccaneer run. After a Kegley RBI walk, Trea Steele
reached on a fielder's choice that allowed two CSU runs to score,
thanks to a Blue Hose error. Despite bases being loaded with just
one out, the Bucs couldn't manage anymore runs and took a 3-0 lead
to the bottom of the inning.
PC answered with a run in the bottom of the second, cutting in to
the lead after three hits. Caitlin Allen got the starting nod in
game two for CSU and stranded two PC runners in the second, to make
it a 3-1 score.
Steele had a lead-off hit to start the third and advanced to third
base after a sacrifice bunt from Jasmine Conley. Kelleher came up
with an RBI single, scoring the first run of the inning. The Bucs
continued to pour it on, using back-to-back two RBI hits from
Shayla Cullum and Kegley. Kegley's double to right field scored
the fifth run of the inning, to put CSU on top 8-1.
The Bucs came right back in the fifth to put the game out of reach,
using four hits to score three more runs in the inning. Lombard had
a lead-off solo homerun to set the pace for the inning and put CSU
up 9-1. After a Hall single, Cullum provided some insurance runs,
sending out a two-run shot to put the Bucs on top 11-1. PC tried
to rally in the seventh with a double in the inning, but couldn't
manage any runs before a final 11-1 score.
Allen picked up the win and improved to 4-3 on the year, after
scattering seven hits and allowing one earned run, while striking
out six. Mary Gordon took the loss and dropped to 6-4, after
