Box Score
BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Jana Matthews sent out a pair of solo
homeruns to jump start the Charleston Southern offense in game two
vs. the Campbell Camels, helping CSU to earn a split after a 7-1
loss and 9-2 win Tuesday, at Eakes Athletic Complex. Matthews
became just the sixth player in school history to record a
multi-homerun game and is one away from tying the single season
record, with seven on the year. With the split, CSU moved to
16-15-1 on the year, while Campbell moved to 12-16-1.
Matthews had a big day for CSU, registering three hits along
with her two homers in game two. Erin Kegley also tallied three
hits on the day, while adding two runs scored and an RBI. Megan
Hall and Megan Lombard both chipped in with two hits apiece.
In game one, both teams started off slow on offense, with Sondra
Vetter starting in the circle for CSU. After giving up a lead off
hit in the bottom of the first, Vetter managed to get out of the
inning, capping the inning off with a strikeout. She followed that
up with a quick one, two, three inning in the second, using a pair
of groundouts and a strikeout.
For Campbell, it was Christina Melton getting the starting nod at
pitcher. Melton also managed to frustrate the CSU offense,
retiring the first nine batters in a row, including striking out
the side in the second.
The Camels broke it wide open in the bottom of the third, using
four hits and four runs to take an early lead. Campbell had four
hits and three walks before CSU would record an out, scoring all
four runs in that time. From there, the Bucs went to Caitlin Allen
in relief, who managed to get out of the jam despite the bases
being loaded. Allen used a strikeout, popup and groundout to get
out of the inning and strand three.
Lombard then looked to get CSU back in the game, with a leadoff hit
in the top of the fourth. The next three batters were retired in
order however, followed by another blank inning in the fifth.
The Camels had another big inning in the bottom of the fifth, using
four hits to score three runs. After a lead-off hit from Amanda
Miller, Lauren Stephan sent out a two run shot that made it a 6-0
Campbell advantage. The Camels added one more in the inning after
Sarah Ling scored on a wild pitch, making it a 7-0 score.
The Bucs were flirting with the scoreboard again in the top of the
sixth, but came up short after a pair of hits in the inning. Trea
Steele got things started with a lead-off hit to right field.
Lombard then posted a double for her second hit of the game,
putting runners at second and third with just one out. CSU
couldn't take advantage however, as the inning ended after a
groundout and flyout.
After Allen stranded three more on base in the bottom of the sixth,
the Bucs looked to extend the game, registering a pair of hits to
start the top of the seventh. Kegley would later score on a Camel
error to put CSU on the board, but it was too little too late, as
Campbell held on for a 7-1 final score.
Melton picked up the win to improve to 6-4, after allowing just
five hits and one unearned run. Vetter received the loss and
dropped to 5-8, allowing five hits and four runs in two innings of
work.
Game One Box
In game two, CSU recorded just three hits through five innings, but
two of them were out of the park. The Bucs didn't waste anytime
getting on the board, using a solo homerun from Matthews in the top
of the second to take a 1-0 advantage. She followed that up with
another homerun in her next at bat, giving the Bucs a 2-0 lead in
the top of the fourth.
Kimberly Hobbs was on fire to start in the circle for the Bucs,
retiring the first nine batters in a row, for three scoreless
innings. Campbell got going in the bottom of the fourth however,
using a lead-off double and three hits to score a pair of runs.
Taylor McGee provided the only RBI hit of the inning, helping the
Camels to tie things up at 2-2.
After multiple pitching changes for Campbell, CSU broke the game
open with six runs in the top of the sixth after six hits. Despite
only allowing three hits through five innings, Brittany Stanley was
relieved by Katie Woodcock. Woodcock lasted only a third of an
inning after allowing RBI hits from Shayla Cullum and Kegley.
Brittany Arnn stepped in the circle from there, but couldn't
register an out. After a pair of walks, Jessica Peters-Brock
tallied a two RBI double.
Stanley came back in to the game at that point, still in the top of
the sixth, but also surrendered a pair of runs. Steele and Melissa
Adams got in the mix with RBI hits, giving the Bucs an 8-2
advantage.
CSU continued to pour it on in the seventh, adding another run
after a Campbell error and Kegley hit. After the runners advanced,
Cullum scored on a passed ball, making it a 9-2 score. The Camels
couldn't mount a rally in the bottom of the inning, as the Bucs
held on for a final 9-2 win.
Hobbs picked up the win for CSU to improve to 6-4, after allowing
seven hits and two runs in a complete game. Stanley took the loss
to drop to 4-8, after allowing six hits and three runs in six and
two thirds innings of work.
