CHALRESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern had a disappointing
weekend, dropping all four games at the Georgia Softball Classic,
after an 11-3 loss vs. the Iowa State Cyclones and a 5-2 loss vs.
the St. John's Red Storm Sunday, at the UGA Softball Stadium.
The Bucs posted five hits for each game with limited offensive
production. CSU's defense also continued to struggle, allowing a
combined 25 hits over two games, while committing seven errors.
CSU fell to 7-8-1 on the young season, after four losses over three
days.
Megan Hall posted a hit in each game, to go along with two RBI,
making it 11 out of the last 12 games with a hit. Three other Bucs
recorded multiple hits, including Melissa Adams, who recorded two
hits and two runs scored. Megan Lombard also chipped in with a
two-run homerun in game two, to score the only runs for CSU.
Iowa State jumped on the bats early and often, posting seven runs
in the opening inning, after six hits and a pair of doubles. The
Cyclones added one more in the second and two in third, putting the
game out of reach early with a 10-0 advantage.
The Bucs had just one hit through the first three innings, as
Kristin Kelleher posted a lead-off hit in the bottom of the third.
CSU couldn't advance the runner however, with a double play ending
the inning.
The Bucs were able to take advantage of some Iowa State miscues in
the fourth, using a hit and two errors to score their first run of
the game. After Shayla Cullum reached on an error, Courtney Konyck
provided an RBI hit to score the run.
CSU added two more runs to extend the game in the top of the fifth,
after three hits in the inning. Kelleher and Adams singled to
reach base, followed by Hall who provided a two RBI single of her
own, making the score 10-3.
The Cyclones managed to end things early however, tallying a run in
the bottom of the fifth to make the score 11-3, ending the game
with the run rule. The Bucs' defensive struggles continued in the
bottom of the fifth, scoring the game ending run on an error.
Morgan Dowdy picked up the loss to move to 1-1, after just a third
inning pitched and seven earned runs. Kimberly Hobbs threw four
innings in relief, scattering eight hits and allowing two earned
runs. Rachel Zabrizkie took home the win, improving to 7-5 after
four scoreless innings and 10 strikeouts.
Game One Box
CSU couldn't get the bats going in the rematch vs. St. John's, with
just three hits and six scoreless innings to start the game. The
Bucs also had four errors in the game, in combination with 12 Red
Storm hits.
The first two innings were blank for both teams, after CSU couldn't
convert on a scoring opportunity in the first. The Bucs also had
runners on first and second in the third, with just one out. CSU
couldn't take advantage however, as the inning ended with a
strikeout and a popup.
The Red Storm got on the board first, using four hits and two
Buccaneer errors to score three runs in the bottom of the third. A
pair of RBI hits for St. John's did the damage, with one unearned
run being posted.
CSU had just one hit over the next three innings, as the Red Storm
held on to a 3-0 lead through five innings. In the bottom of the
sixth, St. John's tacked on two more runs to their advantage, using
four hits and another Buccaneer error. Both runs were earned
however, as the Red Storm took a 5-0 lead in to the seventh and
final inning.
The Bucs tried to start a two-out rally, with a two-run homerun
from Lombard to score CSU's only runs of the game. The homerun was
too little too late however, as a popup ended the game with a final
5-2 score.
Sondra Vetter dropped to 4-3 on the year, after allowing four
earned runs and 12 hits in five innings of work. Linzee Sumrall
threw for a complete game win, improving to 3-2 on the year after
