MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Charleston Southern continued to roll in
their nonconference schedule, with a doubleheader sweep over the
College of Charleston Cougars Tuesday, at Patriots Point. Megan
Hall was on fire, hitting .714 for the day, helping the Bucs to
take a 3-2 game one win, before a marathon nine inning 6-4 win in
game two. CSU improved to 7-4-1 on the year, while CofC dropped to
3-6.

CSU started the doubleheader off with a run in the first inning of
the first game, thanks to a Cullum RBI double that sent Hall across
the plate. The Bucs took advantage of an error earlier in the
inning to score the unearned run, making it an early 1-0 lead.
Sondra Vetter started in the circle for CSU, getting through the
bottom of the first in impressive fashion with three strikeouts.
After three Buccaneer batters were retired in order in the second,
Vetter added another strikeout to make it a blank inning.
CofC got on the board in the bottom of the third, using a two-run
homerun from Kristie Shifflett to go up 2-1. CSU came back with a
single from Jana Matthews in the top of the fourth, but two
strikeouts would follow to move to the bottom of the inning.
The Bucs had a two out rally in the top of the fifth, posting a run
to even up the score at two apiece. Hall provided a two-out
single, before stealing second and advancing into scoring
position. CSU took advantage of another CofC miscue, as Hall
managed to score on a fielding error.
It was still tied at 2-2 heading in to the seventh and final
inning, where the Bucs would score the eventual game winning run.
Melissa Adams and Lombard posted back-to-back hits with one out
recorded, putting runners at first and second. From there CSU had
solid at bats from Hall and Cullum, who both drew consecutive
walks. Cullum received the go ahead RBI, with CSU taking a 3-2
advantage. Vetter wrapped up the game in the bottom of the
seventh, with a one, two, three inning.

Game One Box
CSU posted another first inning run to start game two, thanks to a
RBI double from Cullum. The Bucs would tack on another run in the
top of the third, starting with a lead-off hit from Hall. After
Cullum advanced the runner, Jessica Peters-Brock contributed with a
RBI single, giving CSU a 2-0 lead.
The Cougars did not take long to respond however, tallying three
runs in the bottom of the inning to take back the lead. Two
doubles and a two-run homerun from Kristi Woodall did the damage,
giving CofC a 3-2 advantage.
CSU was held hitless in the fourth and fifth innings, but used
three hits to post two runs in the top of the sixth. Peters-Brock
had a lead-off single to start the rally, followed by Matthews
reaching on an error. Kristin Kelleher and Adams both posted RBI
singles in the inning, as the Bucs retook the lead with a 4-3
score.
The Cougars still had some offense left however, putting up another
run in the bottom of the inning. A pair of singles provided the
run, to tie the game at four apiece. CSU had another hit from Hall
in the top of the seventh, but could put anything else together.
The Bucs narrowly sent the game into extra innings, after CofC had
runners on first and third with just one out. Kimberly Hobbs came
up with two huge strikeouts however, sending it to an eight
inning.
CSU couldn't manage any hits in the top of the eight, but Hobbs
again took care of business, getting out of the inning despite a
runner in scoring position. In the top of the ninth, Adams got on
base after being hit by a pitch, with one out recorded. Megan
Lombard then ripped a triple, to score the go ahead run. Hall
followed that up with her third hit of the game, sending Lombard
home and putting CSU on top 6-4. Hobbs stayed in for the ninth
