A frantic rally late in the second half, highlighted by Chris
Moore becoming the 17th player in CSU history to score 1,000
points, allowed CSU to eliminate the majority of a 19 point Radford
lead. Unfortunately, however, this rally would not be enough, as
the Highlanders held on for a 78-69 victory Saturday night.
The Radford lead hit 19 at the 7:47 mark, capping a 16-0 Radford
run that spanned over five minutes of game time. After shooting
well from the perimeter in the first half, CSU's shooting touch
eluded them during this stretch, as the Bucs would hit on only
three of 20 field goal attempts in the first 12 minutes of the
second half.
CSU would quickly begin to work their way back in to the game
after this point, however. The yeoman's work of the run would come
from the free throw line, where CSU would score seven consecutive
points at one point, helping lead a 15-2 run that would cut the
deficit to 64-57 with 4:34 remaining.
After both teams traded points and free throws for a lengthy
stretch, Moore would break through the 1,000 point barrier with a
three pointer with just 56 seconds remaining. The three was
Moore's fourth on the night, giving him 12 points Saturday and
1,001 points in his four-year Charleston Southern career.
CSU would only get as close as six during this final stretch, as
the Highlanders' connected on the majority of their free throws in
the game's final moments to emerge as nine point victors. Charity
stripe accuracy from Kenny Thomas (24 points) and Phillip Martin
(12 points) allowed both players to have quality scoring nights,
including a new career high for the sophomore Martin.
The Bucs had built a 36-34 lead at the half on the back of
strong perimeter shooting. Though CSU shot only 36.4% in the
opening 20 minutes and made only 12 field goals, eight of these
field goals came from behind the arc as the Bucs shot 57.1% from
three point range in the first half. Leading the way both in the
first half and on the night was Shelton Carter, who made six of his
eight field goals to finish Saturday with 19 points.
On the night, Radford held a 45.1% to 33.8% shooting advantage
and out-rebounded the Bucs 46 to 38. Amir Johnson posted a
double-double by scoring 12 points and corralling 10 rebounds for
the Highlanders, while Omar Carter (10 points Saturday) made up for
struggles from the field by leading CSU in rebounds with eight.
Radford held strong advantages in scoring in the paint (30 to 12
for CSU) and second chance points (20 to the Bucs' two), while the
Bucs received 38 points from their bench to the Highlanders'
14.
For a second consecutive game, the Bucs had a very strong floor
game, as CSU bested the season low set in turnovers against Coastal
Carolina by committing only five turnovers against Radford.
Freshman Tovi Bailey, who played quality minutes in the Bucs'
second half rally, lead CSU with four assists on the night.
The loss drops CSU to 7-18 on the season and 1-7 in Big South
play. The Bucs will look to right the ship Monday night when they
travel to Lexington, Va. to face the VMI Keydets at 7:00 P.M.
