Charleston S.C. - Charleston Southern welcomed NCCAA member,
Toccoa Falls to the CSU Field Hosue Saturday, and after a high
paced game, the Buccaneers ran away with a 107-78 win. Jamarco
Warren poured in 28 points to lead all players, tying his career
high, set just two games ago. With the win, CSU improved to 2-2 on
the young season while the Toccoa Falls Eagles dropped to 8-3.
Jamarco Warren came into Saturday's contest shooting 52 percent
from the floor and an impressive 56 percent from three. Many
people would say that he won't be able to keep up those numbers the
entire season. Those people did not see the performance by Warren
against Toccoa Falls. Warren's 28 points was on 8-10 shooting,
including a perfect 6-6 from three.
CSU had five players reach double figures in a balanced attack on
offense. Omar Carter put up 17 points and 8 rebounds to continue
his steady play. Kelvin Martin recorded his second double-double
in as many games with 15 points and 15 boards, 9 of which were
offensive. JT Knight got his first CSU career double-double with
11 points and a career high 11 assists. Tovi Bailey and Billy
Blackmon chipped in with 15 points, and 11 boards respectively.
The Eagles were paced by Jachin Wettstone, who had 19 points and 9
rebounds.
In the first half, the Buccaneers scored immediately off of a
Blackmon tip to Carter, but the Eagles followed that up with a
three to take their only lead of the game, 3-2. Toccoa Falls hung
around in the first few minutes, until an 11-0 run by CSU, capped
off by a Carter three to put the score at 18-7. The Eagles would
not go away, and traded baskets with the Bucs for the next several
minutes.
A turning point came at the five minute mark, when Senior Giedrius
Knysas came down the lane and threw down a monstrous dunk on top of
an Eagle defender, plus the foul. That gave CSU a 47-31 advantage
for their biggest lead yet. The Buccaneers traded baskets with a
hot shooting Toccoa Falls team in the remaining minutes of the
half, and went into the locker room up 54-41.
The Eagles came out in the second half looking to make up for some
lost ground, cutting the lead to 8 in the sixteenth minute. That
would be the closest Toccoa Falls would get, as CSU's lead would
never drop below double digits again. Both teams looked to push
the ball in the next few minutes, trading basket after basket.
The Buccaneers were able to open things up with a 16-4 run after
Blackmon went up for a dunk with 4:37 left to play. CSU led 97-72
at that point and would go up by as many as 30, before a final
score of 107-78.
The Buccaneers passed the century mark for the first time of the
season and showed just how many weapons they have on the offensive
end. They shot better than 52 percent on the game, including a
blistering 67 percent from three point range. CSU also dominated
down low, scoring 60 points in the paint. For the season, CSU is
averaging just over 78 points per game on 46 percent
shooting.
The Buccaneers will try to keep their hot hands until they host The
Citadel on Tuesday, November 25th, at 7:30 p.m. This game vs.
another cross-town rival will be held at the North Charleston
Coliseum as a CSU home game.
