The Buccaneers conclude the first week of Big South play Monday
with a home match-up against the Radford Highlanders at the Field
House. CSU (6-10, 0-1 Big South), coming off a heartbreaking
overtime loss to VMI on Saturday, will be trying to avoid a sixth
loss in seven games played.
The Highlanders (5-11, 0-1) also dropped a heartbreaker
Saturday, losing at the buzzer, 76-75, at Coastal Carolina. Like
CSU, Radford has dropped five of six entering Monday's contest, but
three of those came against BCS conference opponents (Georgetown,
West Virginia, South Carolina). First-year head coach Brad
Greenberg's squad was picked to finish 8th in the Big South
preseason poll.

The Bucs continue a stretch of playing four of their first six
Big South games at home. Even after Saturday's loss, Barclay
Radebaugh's squad is 5-4 on home courts this season, including 5-2
at the Field House. CSU is only 1-5 in road games, including five
straight losses.
With all of their remaining regular-season games coming in
conference, the Bucs are looking to improve upon last season's 2-12
Big South record, their worst-ever in Big South play. CSU was
picked to finish 7th in the preseason conference poll.
HEAD-TO-HEAD HISTORY
The Bucs and Highlanders are meeting for the 24th straight season
and 55th time overall, making Radford the third-most frequently
played opponent for CSU (behind College of Charleston and UNC
Asheville). Radford leads the all-time series, which dates back to
1984-85, 36-to-18.
The Highlanders have dominated the series for over a decade, having
won 19 of the last 24 meetings between the teams. The Bucs are
10-13 all-time in home games against Radford, 5-18 on the road and
3-5 in the Big South Tournament. Since the arrival of Barclay
Radebaugh in 2005-06, CSU is 1-3 against the Highlanders.
ROOKIE DOMINATION
Between rookies Omar Carter and Jamarco Warren, a CSU player has
won six of the nine Big South Freshman of the Week awards this
season.
Warren took home the award for the third time this season Monday,
following his career-high 26-point performance against VMI that
included a school-record eight three-pointers. He earlier earned
the honor on Nov. 13 and Dec. 3 - the first after scoring 24 points
in his first career game against Anderson, then the second after a
week that included a 22-point effort at The Citadel followed by a
21-point game against the C of C.
Carter has also earned the distinction three times, including
back-to-back awards on Dec. 10th and 17th. The Charlotte, NC native
also received the honor on Nov. 26 after collecting double-doubles
in contests against Auburn and North Florida.
POINTS A-PLENTY
CSU has had little problem putting the ball in the basket thus far
this season. The squad is averaging 77.4 points per game, making
them third in the Big South behind high octane VMI and second-place
UNC-Asheville.
The Bucs have scored at least 70 points in 12 of their 16 games
played this season. The only four games the Bucs failed to top 70
points came against their four "major conference" opponents -
Tulane, Auburn, Florida and Virginia Tech.
THE BIG O!
Freshman forward Omar Carter has made a big splash on both ends of
the court early in his first season at CSU. Carter currently leads
the team in scoring (15.3 ppg) and is second in rebounding (6.1
rpg). He is averaging 17.9 ppg (143 points) the last eight
contests. CSU has never had a freshman lead the team in both
scoring and rebounding for an entire season.
Carter has scored in double-figures in all but one game this season
(11.28 vs. C of C). He was an all-state selection in North Carolina
at Charlotte Christian High School, where he helped lead his team
to the state championship game his senior season.
TRIPLE YOUR PLEASURE
The Bucs have been one of the most prolific three-point shooting
teams in the Big South this season. With an average of 9.4 three's
per game, CSU is second in the conference in making triples behind
only high-scoring VMI (12.5/gm). The Bucs have made at least 11
trifectas in eight of their 16 games this season.
GIMME, GIMME MOORE!
CSU's Chris Moore has cooled off since a torrid start to his senior
season. During the team's recent 1-5 stretch, Moore is averaging
11.2 ppg (56 pts in five games played). In those five games, he is
shooting 18-43 from the field (42%). Moore missed the Ohio
Christian game because of a sprained ankle.
The recent struggles followed a streak of nine consecutive
double-figure scoring games, during which time Moore averaged 17.7
points/game. The senior shot 55% on field goals (58-105) during
that streak, including 31-of-62 on three-pointers.
The Morganton, N.C. native missed the final 14 games of last season
with a broken foot. Moore, one of the top shooters in the Big
South, was named conference Player of the Week on Nov. 26 after
averaging 19.0 ppg in two games, including a career-high 27 points
in the team's victory at North Florida.
WARREN PEACE
True freshman Jamarco Warren has made his presence felt offensively
at the outset of his CSU career. Warren has led the team in scoring
in six out of 16 games, and has already complied six 20-plus point
scoring efforts.
The freshman has started all but one game this season (Dec. 31 at
Stetson), making him the most frequent starter on the squad. The
5-foot, 10-inch Warren is the all-time leading scorer at
Gainesville (Ga.) High School, and was a first team all-state
selection in Georgia his senior season.
MID-SEASON STRUGGLES
For whatever reason, the Bucs have struggled in the months of
December and January under Barclay Radebaugh. In Radebaugh's three
seasons as head coach, CSU is a combined 9-30 in those two months
(and 18-18 in all other months).
The Bucs went 2-4 in December this season, including three straight
losses to finish 2007. CSU is now 4-15 under Radebaugh in December
and 5-15 in January.
NEW FACES
With six newcomers debuting this season and only three seniors on
the roster, the Buccaneers are one of the youngest teams in the Big
South. With the departures of seniors Donnell Covington and Dwayne
Jackson alone, the Bucs lost 42% of their total offense from last
season.
In the backcourt, freshman point guards Tovi Bailey and Jamarco
Warren are serving as CSU's primary ball-handlers this season,
while freshman swingman Austin Johnson has earned expanded playing
time at the outset of conference play. JUCO transfer Lorenza Knight
provides depth at the point as well.
In the frontcourt, freshman forward Omar Carter continues to turn
heads while leading the team in scoring, while East Carolina
transfer Quinton Goods provides a strong rebounding presence.
BIG SOUTH NOTES
CSU, an original Big South member, began the 23rd season of
conference play with a 158-184 all-time record in conference games.
The Bucs won four of the first 12 Big South tournament
championships, but haven't won any since the 1996-97 season.
TOVI, OR NOT TOVI...
Highly-touted freshman Tovi Bailey has started three of the last
four contests, the first three starts of his career. The point
guard has been working back to full strength after missing the
first three contests of the season with a foot injury suffered
early in the fall.
Bailey was averaging only 4.2 ppg before a breakout performance at
Stetson, during which he set or matched career highs in points
(17), rebounds (5), minutes (31) and field goals made (7).
FULL COMPLIMENT OF CARTERS
After serving a three-game suspension, sophomore forward Shelton
Carter was re-instated prior to the Dec. 15th game against
Gardner-Webb. Carter's suspension began on Nov. 28th because of
behavior detrimental to the team. The Greensboro, NC native has
averaged 8.7 ppg (52 pts) and 6.0 rpg (36 rebs) in six games played
since his return.
EARLY HOME COOKIN'
The Bucs played eight of their first ten games this season on one
of their home floors (including a neutral site game against the
College of Charleston at the North Charleston Coliseum.) Included
in those eight contests were three games at the Coliseum. CSU is
now 14-5 under Barclay Radebaugh in non-conference home games.
NFL BOUND?
Senior Vernon Huger, CSU's leading rebounder in the 2005-06 season,
has decided to forgo his final basketball season in order to
concentrate on preparing for next April's NFL Draft. Huger
(pronounced YOU-gee) was second on the Buc football team this
season with 29 receptions and five TD catches. He played in eight
games this fall and had 365 receiving yards.
TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS
Since Barclay Radebaugh took over the program in 2005- 06, CSU has
played very well against non-Division I opposition. Including four
wins this season (vs. Anderson, UVA-Wise, Florida Christian, Ohio
Christian), the Bucs have gone 11-1 under Radebaugh in games
against non-Division I schools. The team's last loss to a non-Div.
I opponent came on December 28, 2005 when CSU fell to NAIA's
Southern Wesleyan 92-88 at home.
