  • Title
    Defensive Backs
Greg Moss joined the Charleston Southern Football coaching staff in the fall of 2019 as the Buccaneers secondary coach. Moss joined the Bucs by way of Miami Carol City where he served as the Chiefs’ defensive coordinator from 2017 and 2018.
Moss’ second year with the Bucs’ program again saw the defensive backs break out in a major way. Cody Cline continued his development in earning Sophomore All-American status, while a pair of freshmen cornerbacks in Matthew Williams and Richard Lawson Jr. both recorded games with at least three pass breakups in the spring. The Bucs finished among the top-30 in the FCS in total interceptions and backed up a unit that finished 38th in total defense in the nation.
Moss made an immediate impact in his inaugural year with the Bucs’ defensive backs as CSU posted 14 interceptions and 35 pass breakups over the 12 game season. Senior defensive back Evan Cruz set the CSU single-season record with 14 pass breakups on the year, while Cody Cline earned Big South Defensive Freshman of the Year and HERO Sports Freshman All-American recognition. The Bucs recorded game-clinching interceptions in two games in the 2019 season and boasted the 21st-best pass defense in the FCS allowing just 187.4 yards per game through the air.
Prior to Carol City, Moss served as the defensive backs coach at Florida International University from 2015-16. Moss served as a defensive quality control assistant for the Panthers for three years prior to ascending to the defensive backs coach. Among his many duties, Moss prepared film breakdown, developed opponent receiver reports, assisted with the offensive scout team, game day passing charts and self-scouting reports.
Moss, who starred in FIU’s defensive backfield from 2002-04, finished his professional football career in 2008. He played two seasons in the Canadian Football League with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2007-08) and Ottawa Renegades (2005-06). He was a starter for Winnipeg’s 2007 Grey Cup Championship team. With Ottawa, he was the team’s Rookie of the Year and started all 18 regular season games.
Following his playing career, Moss got into coaching, first as an assistant coach for Nova High School in Davie (2008-11). He was an assistant defensive coach working with the defensive backs and special teams returners. He then moved over to Miramar High School where he was the Defensive Backs Coach.
As an FIU student-athlete, Moss was a Dean’s List honoree and defensive team captain. In 2003, he was voted FIU Special Teams Player of the Year and earned NCAA I-AA Special Teams Player of the Week during September, 2003. He established nearly all of the school’s records for kickoff and punt returns.
Moss earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education/sports management in 2005 from FIU and received a master’s in sports administration in 2013 from St. Thomas.
Moss and his wife Shaun have three daughters, Sai, Taylor, and Kendall.Â
