CHARLESTON – Radford claimed the series victory over Charleston Southern on Friday evening with a 12-6 win.
Radford scored their first in the second inning off a passed ball. They tacked on another four in the fourth to jump to a 5-0 lead.
Charleston Southern scored off a RBI single by
Blake Edgmon in the fourth and then
Kain Collins crossed the plate on a wild pitch to cut their deficit to 5-2. In the sixth,
Ethan Reader and Edgmon went back-to-back with solo home runs. Later in the frame,
Caden Wolfley advanced home on a wild pitch to tie the game at five apiece.
After this, it was all Highlanders as they went on to score six in the seventh and another in the eighth to jump to a 12-5 advantage. In the bottom of the ninth,
Garrison Barile had a solo homer to straightway center to place the final score at 12-6.
As a team, the Buccaneers finished with 14 hits as Collins, Wolfley,
Alex Marot, Barile and Edgmon each had two. Additionally, they drew four walks with Collins getting two.
They used eight pitchers with
Hunter Porter taking the start and throwing the first 2.1 without allowing an earned run.
Corbin Payne,
Zach Stichweh and
Bryson Huwar were the ones used that did not allow a run to score.
The series finale is set for Saturday, May 16 at 1 p.m. at Nielsen Field @ CSU Ballpark with the game to be available live on ESPN+. Both teams sit at 12-11 in the conference standings following today's result. The seedings for the Big South Championships will be finalized tomorrow after the conclusion of all the games with the tournament to be held in Asheville, North Carolina from Wednesday, May 20 through Saturday, May 23.
