HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Charleston Southern baseball season came to a close on Saturday afternoon to end their historic, record-breaking season in the finals of the Big South Championships. The third-seeded Buccaneers fell to the top-seeded USC Upstate Spartans by a final score of 14-2 for them to clinch the Tournament Championship and Big South's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The ballgame saw a lot of things break the way of the Spartans on both sides of the ball with impressive defensive plays around the field and power hitting on offense.
They broke ahead for the lead in the bottom of the first tallying three runs in it and continued to pad on the lead through the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Charleston Southern got their first run of the game in the sixth with
Nathan Martinez having a sacrifice fly to center field to score
Chandler Tuupo. In the ninth,
Gavin Bogdanchik got his first at bat of the weekend and on the second pitch of his at bat, he drove the ball well over the fence in left center.
Lew Rice led the team in hitting on the day as he went 3-3 at the plate to go with a walk. Tuupo and Bogdanchik each had a hit as well.
AJ Martin drew three walks for the team-lead in the stat.
In the Buccaneers' fifth game in four days, the team had a bullpen game to collect the 24 outs of the Spartans.
Nick Timpanelli had the start.
Ryan DuSang and
Tait Robertson each had a scoreless inning of work. Other pitchers used were
Chris Foster,
Tyler Henshaw,
Hayden Henry and
Christian Krause.
The game ends the Charleston Southern 2025 season with them having a record of 31-22, setting a mark for their first season with 30 or more wins since 2000. Additionally, it is now tied for the second-most victories in a single season in program history.
