#2 High Point Uses Late Surge to Defeat #3 Charleston Southern in Extras on Thursday

HIGH POINT, N.C. – #2 High Point overcame an eight-run deficit in the final three-and-a-half innings to defeat #3 Charleston Southern in what approached a game that lasted nearly five hours. The Buccaneers bashed three runs to surpass the school's previous single-season home run record of 62.

High Point was able to get on the scoreboard first by scoring three runs in the top of the first for an early 3-0 lead. It stayed intact until the fourth when the Charleston Southern offense uncorked a nine-spot to break the game wide open. Chandler Tuupo started it by hitting a two-run home run off the scoreboard in right field for the squad's 63rd of the year to officially break the single-season school record.

The teams continued to go back-and-forth through the middle innings after this. High Point tallied one in the bottom of the fourth, but CSU was able to get an RBI bunt single by Kain Collins which was followed by Kaden Smith having a two-run homer of his own to push the scoreline to 12-4. The bottom half of the inning saw the Panthers go back-to-back with solo home runs, but a top of the sixth two-run blast by Blake Edgmon pushed it back to an advantage of eight at 14-6.

After this, the Panthers were able to piece together nine unanswered runs. They tied it in the bottom of the ninth with a sacrifice fly and scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch to win it 15-14.

As a team, Charleston Southern had 28 base runners with 17 hits, eight walks and three hit by pitches. Collins and Smith each had three hits while Tuupo, McAskie, Pringle, Rice and Edgmon had two apiece. Smith, Tuupo, and Edgmon all had three RBIs.

Tait Robertson had the start and they used Ryan DuSang, Tyler Henshaw, Hayden Henry and Kyle Lewis were all used. Each came up big in certain moments throughout the game against one of the nation's top offensive squads.
