ELON, N.C. – Charleston Southern collected their second weekend sweep of the 2025 season on Sunday afternoon, defeating Elon by a 7-5 final score. The victory moves the Buccaneers to 11-3, continuing their historic start to the season.
Charleston Southern's mark of 11-3 now on the season becomes the second time in the team's D1 era that they have reached that record with the other year coming in 1987. The team in 1987 got to 13-3 before getting tagged with their fourth loss of the season.
Elon scratched the first run across the plate in the bottom of the first. They led their half off with a double to left field and were able to immediately score him with a single up the middle.
Charleston Southern got out to a slow offensive start like they did on Friday evening, but once the team got rolling, they were nearly unstoppable beginning in the sixth. Through the first five innings, the Bucs were no hit but had a pair of batters reach via walks.
In the sixth,
Brandon Phillips got a leadoff walk, finishing out the squad's second time through the order.
Kain Collins was next up and got CSU's first hit of the day with a single through the left side that was able to move Phillips over to third.
Chandler Tuupo had a single through the right side that placed Collins on third and brought Phillips home, tying it at one apiece. Martin then had a single to center, scoring Collins and moving Tuupo up a bag, giving Charleston Southern their first lead of the day at 2-1.
After this,
Lew Rice blasted a ball down the right line, past the first baseman for a triple that scored Martin and Tuupo. On the first pitch of the next at bat,
Gavin Bogdanchik sent a high flyball to right field that allowed for the speedy Rice to beat out the throw for a sacrifice fly and score the fifth and final run of the inning.
In the bottom half of the inning, Rice robbed an Elon batter of a two-run home run as he was able to jump and reach over the wall for the second out.
In the top of the seventh, Charleston Southern scratched across their sixth of the day with
Kain Collins' single up the middle scoring Phillips from second. In the bottom half, Elon was able to have a pair of two RBI hits, tallying four runs to bring their deficit to just one run at 6-5.
The Bucs were able to get another back in the eighth.
Lew Rice led it off with a single through the right side which was followed by a pinch hitting
Lucas Pringle getting a single to center. Each runner was able to move up a base due to a balk allowing
Blake Edgmon to have a sacrifice fly to center to score Rice, putting the score at 7-5.
Ryan Cole earned the starting nod on the mound, the first of his CSU career. He threw the first 4.0, allowing one run to score. He gave up four hits and a walk in a tremendous starting debut.
Camden Chalfant then went in for a scoreless 2.0 frames to claim the victory and move to 3-0 on the year. He gave up two hits and a walk.
Chris Foster was tasked with the next 0.2, giving up two earned runs.
Kyle Lewis finished off the seventh and had the 8
th for 1.1 innings of work. He began the ninth, allowing a bunt single.
Ryan DuSang then came in for him and finished off the game, picking up the save needing just four pitches to record three outs. They hit into a double play on his first pitch and a deep flyout to left field ended the game.
As a team, Charleston Southern had 10 hits and five walks on the day. Collins, Martin and Rice each had multi hit efforts with two on the day while Smith and Tuupo each reached twice with a single and walk drawn. There were six different batters that recorded an RBI with Rice being the lone player with more than one as he had two.
Charleston Southern will be back in action this Wednesday for a midweek contest at The Citadel, their first of five matchups against one of the crosstown foes of the year. Next weekend, the Buccaneers will begin Big South play as they will travel back to the Triad area as they will take on High Point, the conference's preseason favorites.
