COLUMBIA – Charleston Southern completed their first day of the 2025 Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday. There were three finals that were held on Friday with the Bucs taking eight scoring finishes across those which included four podium placements.
Micah Gilpatric headlined the day's action, taking the victory in 5K with a tactically ran time of 14:47.73. Jaden Kinglsey earned a third-place finish in the race with a time of 14:50.53.
Martin Iriondo and
Hayden Goode were also in the top eight, taking fourth with a 14:51.65 and 7
th with a 15:05.79.
The men's shot put was another hotly contested battle throughout the day.
Michael Calhoun threw a 18.17m in the event to break his career and school record in the event and place himself at 6
th in Big South history. He was leader through five attempts until Gardner-Webb's Quentin Peterson threw a meet record to pass Calhoun and get the win.
Dexter Ratliff,
Odin Ferency and
Aaron Pierce were also in the event, each claiming a top-nine finish. Ratliff had a personal best of 16.01m to climb to 5
th in school history and take 4
th at the meet. Ferency went 15.72m for 5
th while Pierce had a personal best of 14.45m for 9
th.
The men's distance medley relay ran a time of 10:08.57 with the squad featuring Liam O'Donell,
Luciano Custodio,
Kaden Kleinhen and
Mason Raasch. They took second at the meet and ran the 7
th fastest time in school history.
There were also the prelims of the 400m and 800m that were held during the day and saw four student-athletes sent through to the finals.
Luciano Custodio ran a season-best in the 400m with a time of 47.88 to earn an advancement on time. In the 800m, O'Donnell, K. Kleinhen and
Collin Kleinhen each moved on with a top three finish in their heat. C. Kleinhen had the fastest time of the group with a 1:53.95 for a personal best and 6
th fastest in school history. Raasch also ran in it and had a season-best of 1:54.91, missing out on the finals by one spot as he claimed ninth.
Through the five events scored, Charleston Southern sits in second place with a team score of 48 points. High Point is the overall leader with 70 points and Gardner-Webb sits in third with 30.
The action for tomorrow is slated for a 2 p.m. start on the track and 1 p.m. in field events for the final day of the 2025 Big South Indoor Track and Field Championships. The action can be kept up with live results at the following link.
