CHARLESTON – Charleston Southern Football announced a pair of hires to their offensive staff on Sunday afternoon. The Buccaneers will be welcoming a pair of coaches from within the state in Seth Strickland as Offensive Coordinator and Landon Martin as offensive line coach.
"We are excited to be welcoming a pair of in-state high-character men of faith to our staff to help write the next chapter of Charleston Southern offensive history," said Head Coach
Gabe Giardina. "They both have great in-state recruiting ties and relationships that will help us to continue the foundation that has been laid to keep the state's top talent here!"
Strickland will arrive at Charleston Southern after working at Anderson since February 2022 in the same role and helping launch the program from its start to its inaugural season this fall. He previously worked with Giardina at Albany State University, joining the Golden Rams staff in 2020 before going to the Trojans.
In his past, he worked at IMG Academy where he was the quarterbacks coach for the 2019 season where he helped them to a 9-1 record and #8 ranking nationally. Prior to that, he was in the professional ranks in the same position for Steve Spurrier's staff on the Orlando Apollos of the Alliance of American Football (AAF) leading them to a league-best 7-1 mark. Their starting quarterback, Garrett Gilbert, led the league in yards (2,152) and passer rating (99.1) that season and is now a member of the Washington Commanders.
He got his start in coaching at the University of South Carolina where he spent six seasons under head coaches Spurrier and Will Muschamp. While there, he worked closely with future NFL draft picks including Hayden Hurst (2018 first round), Deebo Samuel (2019 second round) and Pharoh Cooper (2016 fourth round).
Strickland earned a bachelor's degree in political science from South Carolina in 2012. He was a three-year football letterman, three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll, and a six-time member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll. Also, he was a member of the National Football Foundation Hampshire Society and was the MVP of the inaugural S.C. College All-Star Bowl game.
"Seth's experience under Coach Spurrier, both as a player and on his staff, will be valuable for us in the development of our offensive system for the 2024 season," said Giardina.
Martin joins the Buccaneers' staff after spending the past year at Battle Ground Academy in Franklin, Tennessee. While there he was the offensive line coach, run-game coordinator, assistant head coach and associate director of strength and conditioning. They finished the year with a state runner-up finish as they had a record of 11-3 at the season's end.
There were three offensive linemen who earned All-Region honors at the end of the season as well as one who was selected to participate in the TACA East-West All-Star game. They had nearly 6000 yards of total offense and eclipsed 2400 on the ground. They averaged 172 yards per game on the ground, 7.8 yards per carry and 40 points per game.
Prior to this move, he spent his whole career in the state of South Carolina. He was at Newberry for four seasons from 2021-2023, including the 2021 spring COVID season, helping them to claim back-to-back South Atlantic Conference Championships in his second and third years there. He helped in the development of eight offensive linemen who earned All-Conference honors. During each of these seasons the team's rushing attack ranked within the top three in their conference.
He got his start in coaching as a graduate assistant at the University of South Carolina in 2016. He spent a total of five seasons there serving as an offensive analyst and assistant offensive line coach following the completion of his graduate degree in 2018.
He has assisted in the development of six different future NFL linemen including Corey Helms (2018 Free Agent), Alan Knott (2018 Free Agent), Dennis Daley (2019 sixth round), Zack Bailey (2019 Free Agent), Blake Camper (2019 Free Agent), and Donell Stanley (2020 Free Agent).
Martin earned a bachelor's degree in physical education / leisure services from Newberry in 2016. He played football for the Wolves from 2011-2015, where he was a three-year starter at right tackle and served as a Captain in 2014 and 2015. He was a two-time All-Conference selection and was named All-ECAC, D2CCA All-Super Region II, and Don Hansen's All-Super Region II. Martin was key piece to a pair of teams that made the NCAA Division II playoffs (2013 & 2015).
Landon is married to Callahan Taylor Martin, and the couple has two daughters, Charleston Elle and Oakley Martin.
"Landon is someone that had a great playing career at Newberry College and has had just as successful time since beginning his coaching career and we are excited to have him join our staff," shared Giardina.
