COLUMBIA, S.C. – Charleston Southern Women's Track and Field competed in their first meet of 2025 on Saturday on the campus of South Carolina. A pair of school records were broken to help fans to showcase what this season can become.
In the 60m,
Grenisha Thomas and
Austyn Koppe each advanced to the semifinals of the event with Koppe not competing in it while Thomas advanced to the finals and recorded her best time of the three attempts for 5th overall in 7.63 seconds.
In the 60m hurdles, Koppe opened the prelims with a career best time of 8.53 to move up to 3rd all-time in the school records books. Also in the event were Chloe Maé Wilks and
Maeva Tahou who advanced to the semifinals. Wilks went on to the finals and had a time of 8.68 for 5th overall and moved up a spot in the school records to 7th all-time.
Maddie St. Louis had a tremendous season debut as she claiming the victory in the 400m with a time of 56.89 for an indoor personal best time.
Brenda du Toit also placed in the top runners in the race as she took 7th at 58.27.
In the 600m,
Chloe Greene and
Caroline Aslerin each helped to rewrite the school records for the distance. Greene broke her own school record in the event with a time of 1:35.67, slashing over a full second off her previous best. In Aslerin's debut with the Bucs she ran a 1:38.88 to make an immediate impact as she now sits in second all-time for the event, trailing just Greene.
The Bucs' distance crew had a great showing in their first time they all got to race this season.
Freya Buglass claimed the title in the 800m with a time of 2:15.53 and claimed second in the 1000m with a 2:52.20. The time breaks the school record of nearly a decade and ranks 3rd all-time in league history and the fastest time ran in the event since 2018 in the league.
In the one mile, Charleston Southern swept the podium going 1-2-3 with each running a personal best.
Katrina Husby led them to the line to claim the title at 5:11.10 and was followed by
Charlize Antia at 5:11.95 and
Taylar White at 5:12.92.
Sarah Jacobs broke into the school's top ten for the 3K as she recorded a time of 10:24.75 for 4th in the event. Also, in the 800m,
Finleigh Simonds and
Valerie Capalbo finished in 3rd and 4th in their race on Saturday.
The Buccaneers had a pair of student-athletes compete in the long jump with each having a strong season debut. Greene jumped 5.60m for 6th in the field while Tahou went for 5.57m to claim 7th. Tahou's distance placed her at 10th in school history for the event.
In the throws,
Josaphine Ankney placed in the top five for the shot put with her best heave of the day being 12.88m.
Zemaya Carson finished just behind her in 6th with a 12.75m.
Alayna Abrams had the team's best throw in the weight throw with a mark of 12.44m which placed her in 8th overall.
The team's day came to an end with the women's 4x400m relay which had a great race for second in the field. They had a time of 3:48.91 for 6th-fastest in school history with the squad including St. Louis, Greene, Thomas and du Toit.
The team will return to action at the Orange and Purple Invite hosted by Clemson from January 24-25 for their first back-to-back weekends at the ACC school.
