CHARLESTON – The NCAA Track and Field Committee announced the qualifiers for the NCAA Regionals on Thursday afternoon selecting six Buccaneers to compete in next week's East Region qualifier. Charleston Southern had three male and three female student-athletes chosen to compete.
Among the qualifiers for the Bucs were
Luciano Custodio (400m hurdles), Chloe Greene (javelin)
Shawn Langley Jr. (400m), Amaya Johnson (400m),
Aaron Pierce (javelin) and Layla Senter (shot put).
Custodio ran a season best time in the 400m hurdles just last week with a time of 51.75 in the finals of the Big South Championships to repeat as the outdoor champion in the event. His time ranks 88
th nationally and 46
th in the east region. His personal best is 51.26 which was set at the 2023 Big South Championships.
Greene stamped her spot in the regional meet with her career-best throw at the CSU Last Chance meet on Sunday. She broke her own school record in the event with a heave of 46.24m which also ranks as the 7
th best by anyone in the history of the Big South Conference. Her mark ranks as 38
th in the East Region and 92
nd nationally.
Langley collected his third career individual Big South title last week as he won the 400m dash with a season best time of 46.36 in the finals. The time ranks as 40
th in the East Region and 80
th nationally. His personal best in the event was set at last year's outdoor conference championships with a time of 46.27 in the finals.
Johnson won the Big South Championship in the 400m earlier this May. She ran a personal best and school record time at 53.39 in the event which also ranks as the 5
th fastest in conference history. Her time ranks as 49
th in the East Region and 91
st nationally.
Pierce threw for a personal best this past weekend at the CSU Last Chance Meet with a heave of 64.31m. He took second place at the Big South Championships this year, matching his performance in the event from a year ago. This ranks as 47
th in the East Region and 95
th nationally.
Senter was able to make it into the regional meet with the career-best mark of 15.36m which he did at the CSU Last Chance Meet. This broke the school record for the event. She ranks 48
th in the East Region and 96
th in the nation.
The first round competitions are scheduled for May 22 - 25. The University of Kentucky, in Lexington, Kentucky will host the East First Round and University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, in Fayetteville, Arkansas will host the West First Round. The qualifiers out of these two regions will compete in the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 5-8 in Eugene, Oregon.
