Baseball Knocks Off CAA-Leaders UNC Wilmington on the Road

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Charleston Southern traveled to UNC Wilmington, leaders of the CAA and #42 nationally in RPI, on Tuesday in their final game before a nine-day break from games as the student-athletes will begin their exams. The Buccaneers took down the Seahawks by a final score of 4-2 with Dakota Miller providing a three-run home run in the 8th to put CSU ahead and give them the victory.

"The midweeks have not been real nice to us, but the message today was we have stayed the course by knowing who we are," said Head Coach Marc MacMillan. "Mac, Parks and Truitt were terrific on the bump, and we made the plays on defense. Offensively, The Pack just kept fighting and picked up a two out RBI from Long and then Rivera and Conway get on base allowing Miller to get his swing off and take a shot to put us up. It is a good feeling picking up a win as we head into finals and no games this weekend."

The Seahawks were the first to get on the board courtesy of a leadoff single in the third from Brock Wills followed by a double by Kevin Jones to score Wills.

The lead was short lived as the Buccaneers scored in the top of fourth to tie it at 1-1. Cade Conway drew a walk to start the inning and moved to third after a pair of groundouts that each moved him up a bag. Conway got the final 90 feet needed to score on a double by Evann Long to center.

UNC Wilmington had the next punch, scoring in the 6th to go back ahead. Trevor Marsh had a single up the middle with two outs that scored Alec Demartino, putting them up 2-1 as they headed to the 7th.

In the 8th inning, the Charleston Southern offense broke through to take their first lead of the game. JJ Rivera had a leadoff single and Conway drew a walk to put two runners on. After a groundout and a pitching change for the Seahawks, Dakota Miller stepped to the plate and sent the first pitch he saw over the fence in left field for a three-run homer to put CSU ahead at 4-2.

Evan Truitt came to the mound to finish off the game in the bottom of the inning and kept Wilmington's bats at bay for the Buccaneers to get the massive road victory.

Charleston Southern had Devin MacWatters on the mound to start the game and turned in one of the top performances of his two seasons with the Buccaneers. He tied a career-high in innings pitched with 4.0 and allowed one earned run to go with two hits, a walk and five strikeouts. Parks Ledwell was the first out of the bullpen and threw 3.0 allowing three hits to go with an unearned run as well as picked up the victory to move to 5-1 on the year. Evan Truitt had the save throwing the final 2.0 innings and allowing just one baserunner off a walk.

On the offensive side of it, five different Bucs contributed a hit in the game with them coming off the bats of Rivera, Miller, Long, Christian Bauman and Alex Urlaub. The team also drew four walks with Conway having two while Rivera and Chandler Tuupo added one each.

The Buccaneers will now enjoy a long layoff as they do not have a game for the next nine days. However, they will finish with a flurry of games as they will play 11 over a 16-day span with the first eight to all be contested at Nielsen Field @ CSU Ballpark. During it, they have nine Big South matchups with weekend series against Presbyterian (10-5), Radford (3-9) and Winthrop (4-11).
