#1 UNC Asheville Defeats #2 Charleston Southern in Championship Match

CHARLOTTE – UNC Asheville defeated Charleston Southern in the finals of the Big South Championships by a score of 4-3 in a match that went for over four hours to determine its victor.
 
The Buccaneers started the match by dropping the doubles point. Kassandra Di Staulo and Marina Skegro claimed the first result of the day with a 6-2 victory on court #3. The Bulldogs responded by taking the match in the topflight and then got the first point by winning on court #2, needing a tiebreaker with at 7-6 (5) for the victory on court #2.
 
Charleston Southern then got the first singles point of the match courtesy of Noa Boyd. She won in straight sets with them being at 6-2, 6-4 on the #3 court.
 
UNC Asheville then got a pair of big victories to push their lead to 3-1. Rosie Dickson won at court #5 by a final score of 6-1, 6-3 and was followed by Linge Steenkamp winning by a close margin in the topflight 7-6 (3), 7-5.
 
At this point, the Buccaneers needed every point to still get the victory. Marina Skegro got the victory in her match at court #4. Hers went to a third set, and she won it by a score of 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
 
Jessica Braun kept the match alive, tying it at three each with her victory. After dropping the first set, she battled back to win the last two and have the final score for the day at 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
 
The overall match, as well as Big South Championship came down to the result on court #6 between CSU's Khyanna Singh and Valeria Centeno. After a marathon of a match, Centeno ended up claiming the victory 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, to win the Big South Championship by a final score of 4-3 for the Bulldogs.
 
The loss ends the Buccaneers season with a final record of 12-7. They went 4-1 in conference play and boasted a stellar mark of 9-2 at home. Charleston Southern is denied from winning their fourth consecutive Big South crown with the runner-up finish.
