CHARLESTON – Charleston Southern opened their Big South schedule on Friday evening with a 14-9 victory over High Point in comeback fashion at Nielsen Field @ CSU Ballpark.
High Point was able to get ahead big early as they scored the first five runs of the game, all coming in the first three innings. Charleston Southern got their first punch in the game in the bottom of the third as they chipped into the lead by plating two runs.
Chandler Tuupo drove in the first and later stole home for the second run.
The Buccaneers then got to the bottom of the sixth, where they flipped the game on its head, scoring nine runs during it. Christian Buaman drove the first runner in while
John Emendorfer cleared all the bases and scored himself following a fielding error. The bases were then loaded again later in the inning which saw
Sam Manwarren draw a walk and then
Dakota Miller hit a grand slam to left field to put the Bucs ahead 11-5.
Charleston Southern then added some insurance runs in the 7
th with a wild pitch scoring
JJ Rivera for the first one followed by an RBI bunt single by
Cade Conway for the next one.
High Point was able to score in both the 8
th and 9
th innings, but it proved to be too little, too late.
Brett Gastman threw the first 3.0 innings before handing the ball to
Christian Robb and
Lee Watson for 1.2 and 1.1 innings of work with neither allowing a run.
Evan Truitt came on in the 7
th to close out the game throwing the final 3.0 innings.
Conway and Miller lead the team in hitting with three hits each with Emendorfer holding his own as well as he finished by collecting a pair of hits. Miller led the team in RBIs with four on the day.
Charleston Southern will be back in action tomorrow for the team's military appreciation game. The firstirst serve is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
