BLACKSBURG – Charleston Southern women's track took second place at the Big South Indoor Championships, the best in program history, with a program record 157 total points scored. The meet concluded on Saturday afternoon at Rector Field House on the campus of Virginia Tech University. At the meet's conclusion,
Chloe Greene received a trio of league honors while
Soyini Thompson was selected as the Coach of the Year.
Greene was named as the conference's Most Valuable Athlete as well as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She continued her dominance from day one into today as she placed in the triple jump to score a total of 22 points over her four events competed in. In the triple jump today, she placed 6th after taking 1st in the pentathlon, 3rd in the long jump and 6th in the high jump.
The final event of the day for the women was the 4x400 relay which the Buccaneers took first in. They finished with a time of 3:43.39 with Johnson, Core, Thomas and Ash on the squad.
In the 60m, the Bucs had another solid showing as
Destiny Wallace took the gold in the event with a time of 7.63 with
Grenisha Thomas close behind in 3rd at 7.70. Wallace is the second-ever CSU champion in the event with the first coming in 2005 from Audrika Gibson.
The women's 400 was the most chaotic event of the day as it saw three runners be disqualified in the finals.
Dylann Core came away from it as the champion for the event with her season best time of 56.39.
Maddie St. Louis took 4th in it with her 57.28. A pair of the DQs were CSU's
Jewel Ash and
Amaya Johnson who each finished with some of the top times in the field. She is the second ever CSU athlete to win the title in the event and the first since
Eden Senior in 2019.
Charleston Southern placed five into the finals of the 200 and were able to place three runners in it, while a pair also received DQ status. Johnson ran a personal best time of 24.73 to be second overall. Core and Thomas took 4th and 6th in the event with their times of 24.82 and 25.14 with the first marking a season best and the latter a personal best. The 60m hurdles rounded out the day for the sprinters as the Bucs' Ash took third in the event at 8.79 and had
Brenda du Toit take 8th with a personal best time of 9.40.
The Buccaneers' distance crew continued to show their rise to be one of the top groups of the conference. They placed a runner in the top three in each of the 800, mile and 3000.
Anne Akagi took 3rd in the 800 with her indoor career best of 2:13.53 and was followed in by
Freya Buglass in 5th at 2:14.80.
In the 3K, the Buccaneers scored a pair of runners with
Sarah McCartney in 3rd and had
Keerstin Augustin cross in 6th.
Elizabeth Shaylor ran in the opening heat for the event and took 10th overall as she won her heat with a career best time of 10:19.72.
For the mile, all three Charleston Southern runners scored in the event.
Anne Akagi took 3rd in it with her time of 4:59.31. Augustin was behind her with another 6th-place finish with a career best time of 5:05.80 and had
Emma James behind in 8th with her time of 5:06.90.
In the throwing events,
Zemaya Carson continued to show she is among the Big South's elite, taking second in the shot put and the weight throw. In today's weight throw, her best heave was a 17.63m and had teammate
Layla Senter join her in the top eight at 6th with a personal best of 15.92m.
Today's meet marks the end of the 2024 indoor season for the Buccaneers. They will begin their outdoor track season next month on Friday, March 15 with the team's home meet, the CSU Buccaneer Invitational.
