ORANGEBURG, S.C. - Five players scored in double figures on Tuesday night, as the Charleston Southern women's basketball team scored a season high in points on their way to a 78-50 win over the South Carolina State Bulldogs.
Catherine Alben led all scorers with 15 points while pulling down three rebounds.
Caelan Ellis had a career night for the Buccaneers (4-8), as she had 12 points on 4/7 shooting from beyond the arc.
Madison Adamson had 11 points, while both
Tyonna Bailey and
Keshunti Nichols had 10 points.
After South Carolina State (1-12) took a three-point lead with 5:48 left in the first quarter, Charleston Southern went on a run and never looked back. After Nichols scored on a mid-range jump shot midway through the first quarter, the Buccaneers did not trail for the remainder of the game. That was part of a 14-5 run to close out the opening quarter highlighted by two three pointers from Ellis.
After taking a nine-point lead into the locker room, the Buccaneers came out firing to start the second half, outscoring the Bulldogs 24-7 in the third quarter. They began the quarter on a 17-2 run, as they were able to attack the basket and went 6/6 from the free throw line during the run. The lead stretched to 28 when
Alba Garcia scored on a driving layup in the final minute. Charleston Southern's lead expanded to as many as 30 points, as Alben made it 73-43 with 4:57 to go with a driving layup.
The Bucs shot a season-high 50% from the field and were 15/18 from the free throw line, which was also a season best. It is the first time this season that they have shot 50% or better.
