CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Charleston Southern concluded their time at the Carolina ITA Regionals hosted by UNC Chapel Hill this past weekend.
Marina Skegro's play in singles highlighted the team's performances at the event as she tallied three consecutive victories together.
In doubles, each of the three teams of Buccaneers were able to claim the victory in their opening matches in the round of 64.
Amila Jusufbegovic and
Noa Boyd won 8-0 over a duo from Charlotte.
Marina Skegro and Kassandra DiStaulo won 8-4 over another pairing from Charlotte.
Emmie Moore and
Jaden Davidson claimed the victory in theirs 8-6 against a team from Western Carolina.
In the following round, each of the three doubles teams lost with all coming against ranked opponents. Moore and Davidson lost their match 8-5, competing against the #2 ranked pairing in the draw, Whitley Pate and Anna Zhang of Wake Forest who advanced to the quarterfinals of the event.
For singles, there were five players sent to the qualifying round with them needing to win two matches in their draw to advance to the main draw of the regional. Skegro was the lone Buccaneer to win her opening match, claiming it by straight sets, and went on to win her next one in three sets to move into the main draw.
In that bracket, including Skegro, the Bucs had three players in it, Boyd and Moore automatically advanced due to their individual rankings coming into the event. Skegro continued to roll as she won 7-6 (3), 6-4 over Romana Cisovska of Clemson for her third consecutive victory. Her run ended in the following round as she lost 6-4, 6-3 to Elizabeth Coleman, the #6 seed, to end her time at the event.
Boyd and Moore each lost in their opening matches, but Moore advanced through her first round of the consolation due to an opponent withdrawal. She went on to defeat Ellie Hammond of Davidson 6-4, 6-1 to get a singles victory of her own during the weekend.
In the consolation bracket of the qualifying round, three of the players were able to claim the victory in their additional match. This included Jusufbegovic and Di Staulo by straight sets while
Brenda Yoris went to a third set to win hers.
Next up for the Buccaneers is the Individual Big South Tournament which will be held this weekend at the Rock Hill Tennis Center in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The event will be held from Friday, October 25 through Sunday, October 27.
