CHARLESTON – Charleston Southern Baseball announced the promotion of Karl Kuhn from assistant coach to associate head coach on Monday. Kuhn is coming off his first year back in the Holy City after a three-year stint with the program in the mid-1990s.
"Having served previously at CSU, Karl understands our University's foundation and brings over 30 years of Division 1 experience to share with our staff and student-athletes.," said head coach
Marc MacMillan. "He's one of the best pitching coaches in all of baseball – not just collegiately – who understands both the player along with the everchanging landscape of today's college athletics."
This past spring, Kuhn elevated the Buccaneers' pitching staff to a level it has rarely seen in the past 20 seasons to become one of the top staffs in the Big South Conference. His guidance helped slash the staff's collective ERA by two full runs in his first year as pitching coach. Additionally, the team held opposing batters to the second-lowest batting average in the conference at .251.
Individually, Kuhn aided in the development and improvement of each Bucs' returner from 2022. This included
Daniel Padysak who posted a 3.19 ERA, nearly half of what it was a season ago;
Evan Truitt who had the third-lowest ERA against league competition in the Big South at 2.87; and
Zac Robinson who went from a 9.48 ERA to a 4.89 in just one year.
Kuhn arrived at Charleston Southern this past summer after three-years as the head coach for the Radford Highlanders. Before that, he served as the pitching coach at the University of Virginia for 16 years and was a crucial part of building the Cavaliers into one of the premier programs in the country and their 2015 NCAA National Championship.
"Since my arrival back in Charleston, Jeff Barber, our Athletic Director, the entire Senior Staff and Coach MacMillan and his family have been so supportive and welcoming. It is refreshing to have great leadership and vision surrounding athletics. Completely reminiscent of the wonderful 16 years my family and I spent at the University of Virginia. This is a very generous gesture by our Head Coach and Athletic Director. It is fantastic to be both wanted and needed in an organization. I look forward to working with Coach Mac, Coach Twohig, Coach Merrigan and our entire support staff to bring a second Big South Baseball Championship to Charleston."
During his first go-around with the Buccaneers, Kuhn helped deliver the Bucs their first, and only, conference championship in 1996. Now entering his second season with the team, Charleston Southern baseball will look to continue to build off the success that they saw last year and claim their second-ever Big South crown in program history.
The Buccaneers will open their fall season on Friday, September 22. Their first of three games scheduled will be held Saturday, October 7
th at 1:00pm against the College of Charleston. For more information, follow the Bucs online at
