Bucs Find Runs Late but Fall on the Road at No. 3 Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Charleston Southern adds two runs late, but a strong start from No. 3 Tennessee gave them the mid-week sweep as the Volunteers took the second of two 8-2 Wednesday evening.

No. 3 Tennessee (8-2) found five of its eight runs in the first two frames. It was Blake Burke again coming up big after a big showing in the opener, as a two-run single gave the Vols the early lead. Griffin Merritt added a third in the first after his sacrifice fly scored Burke.

The second stanza saw Tennessee add two more, starting with a Christian Moore groundout to third opening the scoring before Zane Denton's single through the right side scored Jared Dickey.

Burke homered in the sixth, but the Bucs got on the board in the seventh as Sergio DeCello's groundball to second scored Chandler Tuupo

Tennessee would add one more in the seventh, but Charleston Southern battled throughout the night, as Sam Low made the most of his start with a single to left with two strikes to bring Connor Aldrich around to score in the eighth.

Tennessee starter AJ Russell got the start but did not go the minimum five frames to qualify for the win, so it went to Jake Fitzgibbons (W, 1-0) as his line finished at two scoreless frames, surrendering just one hit. Tennessee used eight different arms in the win.

Eddie Olsen (L, 0-1) takes the loss for Charleston Southern, giving up five earned across eight hits while recording six outs. Devin MacWatters found the next four frames, giving up just two earned across three hits and three walks. Chris Chriboga recorded an out while being charged with an earned run as well, and Jared Restmeyer had a good showing in his 1.2 innings of work, allowing just one baserunner.
