Bucs Strong in Day One of Buc Up Tournament

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern softball team started the CSU Buc Up Tournament with a bang, as they won both of their games against UMass and North Dakota at the CSU Softball Complex on Friday. They won a close one against UMass 3-2 and 10-5 against North Dakota in the night cap.

Game 1
The Bucs (3-0) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Ashley Meckley led off with a triple. Gracie Prince brought her home with a SAC bunt.

The Minutewomen (0-7) answered in the top of the third inning off of Annah Junge, taking a 2-1 lead wth a pair of singles.

The Bucs answered in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two of their own to take a 3-2 lead. Prince once again singled, and Meckley scored on a throwing error by the catcher to tie it at two. Then, Harper Schoeneweis hit a sacrifice fly, scoring BriAnna Brooks to give the Bucs a lead that would not change for the rest of the game.

Junge (2-0) picked up her second win in as many starts, as she went the distance. She gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits, no walks and struck out nine in 7.0 innings pitched.

Game 2
The Bucs used an eight-run second inning guide them to victory over North Dakota (0-7). After falling behind 1-0, the Bucs batted around in the bottom of the second inning, taking a comfortable lead.

Schoweneweis and Lexi Markle led off with walks and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. The Bucs tied the game two batters later, as Lacy Johnson brought in Schoweneweis with a sacrifice fly. Then, Ashlyn Cribb knocked in two runs with a double, making it a 3-1 game. After three-straight Bucs reached base via a free pass, Raleigh Lewis made it 6-1 with a two-run single, and Markle cranked a two-run double into right-center field to make it 8-1.

The Bucs scored all eight runs in the inning with two outs and needed just three hits to do so.

After North Dakota made it 8-4 with a pair of runs in the fifth inning, the Bucs added insurance in the bottom of the sixth inning. Cribb hit her second double of the night to start things off and scored on a throwing error by the catcher. Then, Lewis made it 10-4 with an RBI double.

Riley Lauffer (1-0) picked up the win, going 4.0 innings and surrendering two runs on five hits while striking out six. Maggie Carpenter picked up the save (1), going 3.0 innings and allowing three runs on five hits.

Next Up
The tournament continues tomorrow for the Bucs, as they host UMass again starting at 3 p.m. before taking on Providence at 5:30 p.m. for the night cap.
