Tennis Begins 2023 Spring Season at No. 6 Duke

CHARLESTON, S.C. -  After winning their second-straight Big South Championship and qualifying for the NCAA Tournament, the 2023 Spring season begins this Sunday for the Charleston Southern women's tennis team. They will begin their season in Durham, N.C. with a double-header starting with the Duke Blue Devils at 10 a.m. and rounding it out at 1 p.m. against the Charlotte 49ers.

Duke Blue Devils
The host of this tournament started their season off with a 7-0 win on Friday against Furman. It was their 16th-consecutive season-opening victory and their 12th-straight victory at home.  In the Blue Devils' past seven seasons, they have only lost one time at Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center, and that was against Oklahoma in 2022.  They expect to be ACC Champions once again and back in the NCAA Tournament.

Head Coach Jamie Ashworth enters his 27th season at the helm for the Blue Devils, and this expects to be one of his most talented rosters. His team returns two All-Americans in Chloe Beck and Georgia Drummy as well as three other returning letter winners. He has also brought in three graduate transfers that were ranked highly to add depth to a team that went to the Final Four a year ago. This will be the first time that Charleston Southern and Duke have battled it out.

Charlotte 49ers
The 49ers, much like the Buccaneers, will also be opening their 2023 Spring season in Durham. Their match against Charleston Southern will be their first of the season. After their match against the Bucs, Charlotte will begin a stretch of five straight against Power-5 opponents. This will be a great challenge for a team that went 19-7 a year ago, falling 4-3 in the Conference USA Championships against Old Dominion. Despite falling in the championship round, the 49ers put together their best season in program history. They are led by fifth-year Head Coach and Charlotte alum, Anthony Davison.

Charleston Southern
With all but two players returning from last year's squad, thee two-time defending Big South Champions are expected to be right back in the mix for a championship and a spot in the NCAA Tournament for another season. They will once again be led by Head Coach Anca Dumitrescu, who has been at Charleston Southern since 2018. Since taking over the program, Charleston Southern has soared, making the NCAA Tournament for just the second and third time in program history over the past two seasons. After this weekend, the Bucs will play 11 of their next 12 matches at Gary Clark Banks Sr. Tennis Center.
