HIGH POINT, N.C. – A record-smashing performance by
Chloe Greene in the heptathlon claimed the Charleston Southern women their first Big South event title Tuesday as the Bucs capped day two competition of the league championships at Vert Stadium in High Point, North Carolina.
GREENE NEVER WAVERED
Through the first-four events of the heptathlon Monday, Greene held a first-place advantage in the small field of just seven participants. She never relinquished that lead as the multi-event put three more events on the docket, winning each of the long jump, javelin and 800 meters to capture the gold by 660 points over her next-closest competitor. She totaled 4988 points throughout the seven points, setting not only a personal record, but also a CSU program best, the facility record and the fifth-highest effort in Big South history.
STEEPLECHASE ADDS ANOTHER STRONG BUCS SHOWING
The final event of the day was the 3000-meter steeplechase and
Anne Akagi claimed the bronze, just ahead of teammate
Sommer McKenzie as the pair gave Charleston Southern one-half of the top-four finishers. Akagi's 11:00.03 sets a new personal record and clocks in as the second-best time in school history, just .66 seconds ahead of the third-place performance in the record books.
McKenzie also set a new personal record with her fourth-place time of 11:09.91, slotting her seventh among the all-time Top-10 Buccaneers.
REST OF THE TRACK EVENTS SET UP FINALS
Three other track events featured the blue and gold Tuesday and each one was in the preliminary stage, leading to Wednesday's finals. The best showing came in the 100-meter hurdles where
Chaneal Harris placed fourth in 13.86.
In the 100-meter dash,
Amanda Obijiaku crossed the finish line in fifth at 11.76, while
Destiny Wallace set a personal record with her ninth-place time of 11.86.
FIELD EVENTS INCLUDE ONE PR
Three Charleston Southern student-athletes saw time in the field events with a personal-record jump from
Sonsoles Barba in the triple jump leading the way. She set her own best distance with a leap of 11.77m (38'7.5") to place ninth in the event.
Layla Senter edged out
Kaitlyn Migneault in the shot put, placing sixth ahead of her fellow Buc in eighth.
UP NEXT
The championships conclude with final day action Wednesday at Vert Stadium as Charleston Southern looks to move up the team leaderboard from its current fourth-place standing.
