LYNCHBURG, Va. – Jaymee Domoney continued his solid indoor track & field season with a school-record time in the Mile run, as six overall Buccaneers earned new personal records in their respective events on the final day of competition Saturday at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational in Lynchburg, Virginia.
DOMONEY SETS THE NEW STANDARD
In just his second time competing in the event this winter, Domoney, from Salisbury, England, broke the school record in the Mile run by crossing the finish line in 4:04.57, ahead of the previous-best time of 4:05.01 set by
Micah Gilpatric earlier this season at the Clemson Invite.
Domoney's time not only established a school record but it also moved him into the Big South's All-Time Top 10 listing, bumping Gilpatric's effort out of the category. It's his second overall PR of the winter, both of which are among the program's all-time Top 10, after he finished third in the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.11 at the Carolina Challenge last month.
OTHER MALE PRS
Joining him with new personal records in the men's track events also included junior
Rob Howorth in the same Mile race, clocking a 4:08.05. On the track side, sophomore
Holden Gerth tossed the shot put for the first time in his career.
NEW EVENT
The men's distance medley relay hit the track for the first time this season and placed fourth out of five teams who entered. The Buccaneers in the event included
Tom Joyce,
Luciano Custodio,
Jeff Wedding and
Jacob Hamacher. The quartet's time of 10:21.65 ranks fifth in program history and is the first to enter Charleston Southern's Top 10 since a pair of squads in 2020.
HIGH MARK LEADS WOMEN
On the women's side, sophomore
Layla Senter moved her way into third place among career Bucs with a shot put toss of 13.64m (44'9"), which also is a new personal best. She was one of two CSU throwers to post a personal record in the event, as freshman
Chloe Greene also established a new mark as the only two Charleston Southern competitors.
ANOTHER SOLID MILE
In the women's Mile race, senior
Zanelle Willemse led the way with a time of 5:14.29, sliding into the eighth on the program's all-time Top 10 chart.
UP NEXT
The women's squad will take the next two weeks off in preparation for the Big South Championships, which will be held February 24-26 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The men, meanwhile, will send a select group of competitors to the JDL DMR Invitational, also in Winston-Salem, next weekend, February 18-19. The rest of the squad will continue to train for the league championships.
