Charleston Southern Falls Short on Final Drive at Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Charleston Southern football found themselves in a battle Saturday afternoon with Campbell on the road, having the ball down a score and a chance to take the lead in the final two minutes but fell just short. Campbell stopped CSU on fourth down with just a handful of ticks left to hang on to the 34-28 win.

SCORE FOR SCORE EARLY
Campbell was the first to find pay dirt, taking it 75 yards on the opening drive of the game to take the early lead before Charleston Southern was able to answer the call. After neither team found much success on offense, TJ Ruff broke the plane from a yard out to knot things up at seven, apiece.

STAYIN' WITHIN STRIKING DISTANCE
Charleston Southern never led in the contest, but the Buccaneers made sure to stay within striking distance the whole way. Campbell's biggest lead came at the 4:00 minute mark with a rushing touchdown to take the 21-7 lead, but it was again the ability of CSU to stay in it that showed down the stretch. Seth Anderson hauled-in an Isaiah Bess pass and took it 35 yards to the house to again move within a score with just a minute and a half to play in the first half.

THROUGH THE AIR
Isaiah Bess continues to throw the ball well, connecting on two long passing plays to make up two of the four touchdowns scored for Charleston Southern. Vinson Davis followed Seth Anderson's 35-yard house call in the first half with a 33-yard reception for a score on the opening drive of the second stanza. Davis' reception again brought the Bucs within a score.

NUMBERS, NUMBERS AND MORE NUMBER
JD Moore and TJ Ruff made up CSU backfield today, as the two backs recorded a combined 91 yards while both finding a score on the ground. Bess used six attempts to collect 32 yards on the ground while Tony Bartalo recorded 20 yards on five rushes.

On the defensive side of the ball, Charleston Southern recorded nine TFLs with Garrett Sayegh leading the way with two-and-a-half of his own to go along with a sack. Sayegh had a strong showing in the box, recording 16 total tackles that includes a sack and 2.5 tackles for loss. Charleston Southern collected four sacks for a total of 30 yards while surrendering just one on the other side of the ball.

Chavon Fields, Anton Williams and Shary Jefferson each stand in elite company today, as the trio are the only three in the contest to record a sack and a tackle for loss.
