Faye posts double-double, Bucs fall short against Belmont Abbey

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Alyssia Faye notched her first double-double of the season Monday evening but visiting Belmont Abbey used a strong second quarter to slip past Charleston Southern, 56-48, inside Buccaneer Fieldhouse.

Faye finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds and five steals, leading the Bucs in all three categories. Tori Gittens added 13 points, scoring in double-figures for the third time this season. Freshmen Madison Adamson and Skylar Baltezegar had seven points apiece, while Sha'Mya Leigh had three assists.

The Bucs opened the scoring on a turnaround jumper by Faye. A layup by Baltezegar and a Gittens 3-pointer sent CSU on a small run to give the Bucs a five-point lead, their largest of the contest. CSU held an 11-8 lead after the opening quarter.

Belmont Abbey opened the second quarter on a 10-3 run to force a CSU timeout, with Brittany Autry scoring seven points for the Crusaders during the run. Back-to-back baskets by Leigh and Gittens tied the game at 20-all, but another Autry layup gave Belmont Abbey the lead for good. The visitors took a 27-23 lead into the halftime break.

The Crusaders scored the first six points of the third quarter to stretch their lead to double-digits before a Gittens 3-pointer ended the run. Late baskets by Adamson and Faye cut Charleston Southern's deficit to five, 37-32, late in the quarter but Belmont Abbey sank a pair of late free throws to take a seven-point lead into the final quarter.

Jordan Rogers hit a pair of free throws to begin the fourth quarter for the Bucs, cutting Belmont Abbey's lead to five, 39-34. That five-point deficit, however, was the closest CSU got. Belmont Abbey pushed its lead to as many as 11 and went 10-for-13 from the charity stripe in the quarter to close out an eight-point win.
