Football season comes to an end at Georgia

Box Score ATHENS, Ga. – Charleston Southern's 2021 football campaign ended Saturday with a 56-7 loss at FBS unanimous and consensus No. 1-ranked Georgia at Sanford Stadium. The loss caps year three of the Autry Denson era in charge of the Buccaneers' football program.

CRAZY PLAY LEADS TO SCORE
The Bucs' touchdown came in the third quarter as a result of two turnovers on the same play. Quarterback Jack Chambers' pass was picked off by Xavian Sorey. As the linebacker started to work his way up the field, wide receiver Garris Schwarting came from behind to wrap him up. In the process, he got both hands on the ball and stripped it loose, popping it free. With the ball still in the air, he secured possession and then sprinted towards the CSU end zone for the score with 5:40 left in the third quarter.

LIMITED SCORING
Although Charleston Southern scored just one time, the seven points are still more than many of the Bulldogs' opponents this fall. UGA has given up at least seven points in a game just seven times in 2021 with a high of 17 allowed at Tennessee, last week. The Buccaneers' seven points are more than UGA surrendered versus Clemson (3; Sept. 4) and against Missouri (6; Nov. 6) in addition to shutout triumphs in back-to-back SEC contests at Vanderbilt (Sept. 25) and against Arkansas (Oct. 2).

PICK ON FIRST DRIVE
The top-ranked Bulldogs received the opening kickoff but their first possession was cut short due to an interception by Garrett Sayegh, his second of the year. The middle linebacker picked off a Stetson Bennett pass intended for John Fitzpatrick on the game's fourth play, giving the Bucs the ball on their own 32-yard line.

SMITH HALTS DAWGS NEAR END ZONE
On Georgia's first drive of the third quarter, Kamron Smith provided CSU with another turnover. The Buccaneers defense kept the 'Dogs out of the end zone on a third-yard scramble by quarterback Carson Beck. Instead of a field goal attempt, UGA lined up for fourth down from the 2-yard line. Kamron Smith had other ideas, as he worked his way around receiver Jackson Meeks for another Charleston Southern interception and increasing his season tally to two.

HISTORY VS. THE FBS
The setback is the 25th in as many tries for the Buccaneers all-time against FBS schools, including 0-3 under Denson. CSU is 0-15 against 'Power 5' opponents, schools which are members of the Atlantic Coast, Big Ten, Big 12, Southeastern and Pac-12 conferences.

RECORDS
Charleston Southern: 4-6
Georgia: 11-0

SEASON CONCLUDES
Saturday's game was the finale of the 2021 campaign for the Bucs, who traded wins and losses over the final seven weeks. Charleston Southern now will turn its attention to the 2022 season.
