Buccaneers hold off second-half Camels run in Bucs' 41-31 win on Senior Day

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern utilized four Jack Chambers touchdown passes, three to Kameron Brown, and a solid defensive effort held off a late Campbell second-half rally as the Buccaneers topped the Camels on Senior Day at Buccaneer Field, 41-31.
 
CSU (6-6, 4-2 Big South) raced out to the quick 14-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to a pair of Chambers touchdown passes to Demetrius Jones and Brown. Campbell (6-6, 3-3 Big South) rallied back with a trio of scores in the third quarter with Williams finding the end zone twice on the ground to cut the Bucs' lead down to 34-31.

Chambers went back to Brown in the fourth quarter with a fade into the back of the end zone for the four-yard score to put CSU ahead 41-31 with 9:18 to play. Dennis Fisher secured the CSU win with a late interception on Campbell's final drive to close out the Bucs win.
 
Chambers paced the Bucs after going 17-of-29 through the air for 217 yards and four touchdown passes. Brown finished with three catches for 32 yards and a trio of touchdown receptions, while Garris Schwarting hauled in five catches for 124 yards. Kendrick Bell added his second consecutive 100-yard rushing effort with 123 yards on 22 carries.
 
Hajj Malik-Williams' efforts led Campbell on the day as the freshman quarterback finished with 144 passing yards and a touchdown, while adding 74 rushing yards and two more scores on the ground. Jalen Kelsey hauled in a team-high five catches for 75 yards.
 
Nick Salley paced CSU's defensive efforts with eight tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss. Shaundre Mims added his Big South-leading 10th sack, while Anton Williams added a sack and tackle for loss.
 
Campbell's Justice Galloway-Velasquez lead all players with 15 tackles, while Darion Slade added 12 tackles in the loss.
 
How They Scored
  • CSU marched down the field on the opening drive of the game with Chambers targeting Demetrius Jones for the 11-yard touchdown pass on the right sideline to put the Bucs ahead 7-0 with 12:13 remaining in the first quarter.
  • Kameron Brown and Chambers partnered up for the first time of the game with a 26-yard touchdown pass to the left side of the end zone to put the Bucs ahead 14-0 with 8:41 remaining in the opening quarter.
  • Campbell was on the scoreboard with 5:35 remaining in the first quarter as Williams found Jalen Kelsey for the 15-yard score to cap a six-play, 75-yard drive to cut the CSU lead down to 14-7.
  • Alex Usry drilled his first field goal of the game with 12:55 remaining in the second quarter to put the Bucs ahead 17-7 following the nine-play, 49-yard drive.
  • Chambers and Brown connected for the second time with the redshirt senior wide receiver hauling in the two-yard fade pattern to end a six-play drive and put CSU ahead 24-7 with 7:52 remaining in the first half.
  • Usry knocked in his second field goal of the game, this one from 34 yards, to put the Bucs ahead 27-7 with 3:26 left in the half.
  • C.J. Freeman put a late score in the first half for the Camels with a 31-yard touchdown run up the middle to send the teams into the break with CSU ahead 27-14.
  • Campbell continued to fight back into the game with Williams taking in the 11-yard touchdown carry after scrambling out of the backfield to cut the CSU lead down to 27-21 with 10:58 remaining.
  • Jamari Dunbar pushed through the line with a one-yard touchdown plunge to cap a four-play, 51-yard drive highlighted by a trio of Campbell defensive penalties to put the Bucs ahead 34-21 with 9:30 remaining in the third quarter.
  • Colin Gary put the Camels back on the board following a Bucs interception with a 32-yard field goal to put Campbell back within 10 points with 6:55 remaining in the quarter.
  • Williams' six-yard touchdown run on the final play of the third quarter cut the CSU lead down to three points capping an 11-play, 76-yard drive to put the score at 34-31 heading into the final 15 minutes of the game.
  • Chambers and Brown connected for the final time with 9:18 remaining in the fourth quarter as the duo found each other for the four-yard touchdown connection to put the Bucs back ahead 41-31.

  • Kameron Brown finished sixth in all-time receiving yards (1,660) and his 98 catches puts him eighth all-time. 
  • Brown's 10 touchdown receptions in 2019 tied for the Bucs single season record with Maurice Price (2006) and Brad Johnson (1994), while his three touchdown catches on Saturday tied for the second-most all-time in a single game with Gerald Stevenson (Oct. 18, 2008 at Stony Brook).
  • Brown (18) finished one touchdown catch shy of Maurice Price (19) for the receiving TD record.
  • Charleston Southern finished off their third .500 or better season over the last four years as the Buccaneers finish 6-6 record on the season. After starting the season 0-4, the Bucs rallied back with wins in six of their last eight contests.
  • Kendrick Bell rushed for over 100 yards for his second straight game. He finished with exactly 123 yards in back-to-back games and was the first Buc to post back-to-back rushing efforts over the century mark since Mike Holloway achieved the mark in 2016.
  • Jack Chambers threw for four touchdown passes tied for the third-most touchdowns by a Buccaneers quarterback.
  • Dennis Fisher picked off his first collegiate pass and was the Bucs' ninth player to record an interception this season.
  • CSU's 35.0 team sacks established a new CSU and Big South single season record as the Bucs eclipsed their own mark of 34.0 set back in 2017. CSU is the lone school in the Big South to post a 30.0 sack season, eclipsing the mark in 2002 (31), 2017 (34) and 2019 (35).
  • Justin McIntire set a new CSU single season record with his third fumble recovery of the season.
  • Alex Usry finished the year with a school-record 19 field goals after booting two over Campbell. His 82 points led the Bucs in 2019.
  • Evan Cruz finished the season with a CSU record 14 pass breakups, eclipsing the previous mark of 12 set by Malcolm Jackson (2015) and equaled by Shadarius Hopkins (2017).
  • Shaundre Mims set a CSU record with his 10th sack of the season, eclipsing the previous mark shared by Gary Hamby (1998) and Anthony Ellis (2017).
  • Nick Salley's 2.5 tackles for loss against Campbell helped him edge Anton Williams for the Big South lead, with 17.5 on the season. Salley's mark gives him the second-most in a CSU single season, while Williams (17.0) mark put him in a three-way tie for third all-time.
  • Jack Chambers' 2,029 passing yards for the season made him the first CSU quarterback to eclipse 2,000 yards in a single season since A.J. Toscano (2,092) hit the mark in 2009.
  • Chambers' 14 touchdown passes put him sixth all-time in a CSU single season.
