CSU drops hard-fought contest to Gardner-Webb, 75-59

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Gardner-Webb had four players in double-figures as the Runnin' Bulldogs sprinted past the Buccaneers, 75-59, on Saturday at the Buc Dome.

CSU falls to 10-15, 5-9 following the defeat, while Gardner-Webb improves to 17-9, 7-7 with the win. Ke'Asia Jackson led the Bucs with a season-high 22 points, while Weknyne Dumorne recorded a double-double with 12 points and ten rebounds.

Gardner-Webb stormed out to an early 15-4 lead on Alexus Hill's three-pointer with 4:25 to play in the first quarter. Jackson's jumper twenty seconds later ended a CSU field goal drought of nearly five minutes as the Bucs trailed 15-6. The Runnin' Bulldogs continued its hot shooting to grab a 23-12 lead at the end of the first frame.

CSU opened the second quarter on an 8-2 run as a Jackson jumper cut Gardner-Webb's lead to 25-20. The Runnin' Bulldogs responded with a 10-2 run to go ahead 35-22 on Carley Plentovich's triple with 2:39 left in the period. GWU held a 39-25 advantage at halftime.

The Bucs used a 9-4 run to jumpstart the second half as Dumorne's layup trimmed Gardner-Webb's lead to 43-34 with 5:56 remaining in the third quarter. CSU narrowed the margin to 47-42 following a Jackson jumper. Plentovich's jumper with 27 seconds to go put the Runnin' Bulldogs ahead 52-44 at the end of the third stanza.

Gardner-Webb continued to control the tempo in the fourth quarter as Tierra Huntsman's three-pointer made it 62-50 with 4:12 remaining in the game. The Bucs kept fighting and pulled within 63-53 with 1:48 to go. The Runnin' Bulldogs closed the game by making 12-of-16 from the free throw line to secure the win.

Carley Plentovich led Gardner-Webb with a game-high 24 points, while Ky'Asia Stanford scored 18 points. Hill had 15 points, while Huntsman added a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
