CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern closed out the Big South regular season on Friday afternoon sweeping past visiting UNC Asheville at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex, 7-0.
The Bucs swept the doubles point and then took all six singles matches in straight sets to improve to 12-4 overall on the season, 7-2 in Big South Conference play. UNC Asheville falls to 6-9, 4-5 in conference action with the loss.
Valeria Koussenkova and Sophie Cloessner opened up the Bucs' sweep with a 6-4 win over Asheville's Hunter Hall and Lauren Brooker on court no. 3. Kimberley Koerner and Gabriela Srodowski followed with a 6-4 win over Ericka Rivero and Christin Louw on court no. 2 to secure the doubles point for the Bucs.
Nicolin Luecke and Brianna Thompson closed out doubles play with a 7-5 win on court no. 1 over Hannah Francisco and Kylee Shipley.
The Bucs continued their momentum in singles action as Srodowksi picked up the first win of the day on court no. 4 over Hall after the Asheville athlete was forced to retire, 6-2, 3-0. Koussenkova followed shortly after with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Shipley on court no. 6 to give the Bucs the 3-0 lead.
Koerner continued the CSU winning streak with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Louw on court no. 5 to seal the match for the Bucs. Thompson followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Brooker on court no. 3.
The Bucs closed out the match on courts 1 and 2 with Cloessner topping Rivero on court no. 2, 6-2, 6-2, while Luecke topped Francisco 7-6, 6-2 on court no. 1 to end the match.
Charleston Southern closes out the regular season tomorrow afternoon as the Bucs host Emory at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex. Doubles play between the teams is set for 2 p.m.
