CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern fell in Big South Conference play on Wednesday afternoon as the Buccaneers dropped a 6-1 decision to visiting Coastal Carolina at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex.
Sophie Cloessner picked up the CSU (9-4, 4-2) point with a straight sets win in singles play, and added a doubles win with Valeria Koussenkova to go undefeated on the day. Coastal Carolina improves to 15-4, 5-1 in Big South Conference play with the win.
The Chanticleers picked up the doubles point with wins on courts 1 and 2. Cari Berry and Natalie Wall topped Gabriela Srodowski and Kimberley Koerner on court no. 2, 6-0, while CCU's Libby Scott and Sara Bondar topped Nicolin Luecke and Brianna Thompson on court no. 1, 6-3.
The Bucs took the third doubles match on court no. 3, 6-2, with Cloessner and Koussenkova topping Coastal's Marie Babayan and Romane Delay.
The Chanticleers took five of the six singles matches in recording the win.
Srodowski fell to Berry on court no. 4, 6-1, 6-3, while Scott topped CSU's Luecke on court no. 1, 6-1, 6-3 to give Coastal Carolina the 3-0 lead. The Chanticleers clinched the match on Babayan's 6-4, 6-4 win over Koerner on court no. 5.
Delay topped Thompson on court no. 3, 6-2, 7-5 to give the Chants the 5-0 lead.
Cloessner put the Bucs on the board on court no. 2 with a straight sets 6-4, 6-4 win over Wall.
The Chanticleers took the final point on court no. 6 as Koussenkova fell in the third set tiebreaker to Bondar, 2-6, 7-6, 10-8.
The Buccaneers continue Big South Conference play at home this weekend as CSU hosts Liberty on Saturday morning at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex. First serve is set for 11 a.m.
