Bucs drop midweek decision at Jacksonville, 4-1

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Six Jacksonville pitchers combined to hold Charleston Southern to seven hits and a lone earned run in a 4-1 win on Tuesday night at Sessions Stadium.

CSU falls to 10-11 overall, while JU improves to 14-6 on the season. The Buccaneers open Big South Conference play on Thursday at CSU Ballpark against Campbell. First pitch is at 6 p.m.

JU rallied from an early 1-0 deficit with a pair of runs in the fifth and a couple of late insurance runs to take the only meeting between the schools this season.

JU's Austin Hays' RBI single in the fifth plated the Dolphin's first run and a catcher's interference with the bases loaded led to JU's first lead. The Dolphins added two runs – one unearned – in the eighth to pad the lead.

Starter Evan Nations (L, 0-3) was solid for CSU, surrendering two runs, one earned, in five innings of work. He struck out three and walked three.

CSU's lone run came on an RBI single by Sly Edwards in the third to score Brandon Burris. Edwards finished 2-for-4, wjile DH Mason McClellan was 3-for-4.

The Bucs' best offensive opportunity came in the sixth on a two-out double by McClellan after a Chris Singleton single, but

Hays finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored for JU. Five relievers combined to hold CSU to five base-runners over the final six innings.
