West Virginia deals Bucs first loss, 5-0

Box Score

CHARLESTON, S.C. – West Virginia's Ross Vance pitched five scoreless innings and the Mountaineers scored four runs in the fourth inning to hand Charleston Southern its first loss of the season on Saturday afternoon at Joe Riley Park, 5-0.

Vance (W, 1-0) held the Buccaneers (1-1) to four hits to combine with two relievers for the shutout. The Bucs put runners on throughout against WVU, but couldn't convert with runners in scoring position and hit into two double plays.

The Mountaineers got a two-run double from Ray Guerrini and plated two more on a well-executed squeeze play by K.C. Huff to break the game open in the fourth. Leftfielder Caleb Potter hit a solo home run in the sixth to cap the scoring.

Bryan Dye was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles to lead CSU's offense. Reliever Evan Nations pitched 2.1 scoreless innings in relief in his first action since 2014.

The two teams play the final game of the series at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning at Joe Riley Park.
