Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. – Andrew Tomasovich turned in his third start without allowing an earned run and Austin Weekley worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth as Charleston Southern shut out Penn State on Friday evening at CSU Ballpark, 2-0.
Tomasovich (WP, 3-1) worked seven innings, scattered five hits, and struck out seven without a walk to get his third win in four starts. The Buccaneers plated a run in each of the first two innings and made them stand up. Bucs head coach Stuart Lake was excited about the toughness his team showed last and, of course, his Friday starter.
"Andrew Tomasovich, to me, gave us a Friday night start that your looking for every Friday," Lake said. "He just really battled through some tough situations," He had a couple of big time strikeouts. I'm just very proud of our team on all fronts."
Penn State almost changed the entire complex in the ninth. The Nittany Lions loaded the bases with no outs on CSU closer Austin Weekley. Ryky Smith reached on a sacrifice bunt that went for a hit to put the pressure on, but weekend induced a fielder's choice back to himself and followed by getting Ryan Richter to ground into a game-ending double play.
"I told our guys after the game tonight that our pitchers really pitched to contact tonight," Lake said. "We only gave up one walk tonight. That's great. When you don't throw a ton of pitches per at bat, your defense is always ready. I thought that last inning was just a prime example of how we could allow the defense to really make some plays tonight. We got into a tough situation and our defense was ready to go and took care of business for us."
CSU gave Tomasovich all the offense he needed in their first two at-bats.
Junior Brandon Burris, who led the Bucs with two hits, doubled to leadoff the game and scored on an RBI single by Andrew Widell to give the Bucs a 1-0 lead.
CSU added a run in the second, again getting the leadoff man on-base. Sam Remick singled and scored on a sacrifice fly from Chris Singleton to push the lead to 2-0.
Widell and Burris both had two hits for the Bucs.
Aaron Novak and Taylor Skerpon had two hits apiece for the Nittany Lions.
Starter Nick Hedge (LP, 0-2) pitched well, but took the loss for PSU. He worked 7.0 innings and gave up only the two runs.
The teams will play against on Saturday at CSU Ballpark. First pitch is at 4 p.m.
