WVU upends Buccaneers on Saturday, 9-2

Box Score

WASHINGTON, Pa. – West Virginia took advantage of two Charleston Southern errors during a four-run sixth inning to hand the Buccaneers a 9-2 loss on Saturday afternoon at CONSOL Energy Park. CSU falls to 12-13 overall, while WVU improves to 14-10.

The Mountaineers broke open a 1-0 game with four runs in the sixth and added four more in the eighth to put the game out of reach. WVU loaded the bases behind a pair of throwing errors by the left side of the Buc infield to open the sixth. CSU starter Evan Raynor (L, 2-2) hit Cam O'Brien to add the Bucs' woes as WVU reeled off three-straight RBI singles to take a 5-0 lead.

The Bucs scored a run in each of their final two at-bats. Sly Edwards singled home Mike Sconzo for the Bucs' first run to cut the lead to 5-1 in the eighth. Sam Knight doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jack Crittenberger in the ninth for CSU's final run.

The unearned runs hurt what was a solid start by Raynor. He gave up one earned run in 5.1 innings and struck out four. Reliever Dennis Buckley pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in relief.

West Virginia outhit the Bucs, 13-8. Shaun Wood was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Five WVU players had multiple hits.

Ross Vance (W, 3-2) worked 8.0 innings and had nine strikeouts to get the win for WVU.

Sunday's series finale is scheduled for noon.
