Red-hot Ison, Bucs travel to Asheville for Big South series

Box Score

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern will try to ride the momentum of a midweek win over No. 6 South Carolina to its second-straight Big South series win, when it travels to UNC Asheville on Thursday to open a three-game series.

First pitch Thursday night is at 6 p.m., followed by a 7 p.m. first pitch on Friday and a 2 p.m. start on Saturday. Saturday's game can be watched live on ESPN3, while Friday and Sunday's games will be streamed on the Big South Network.

The time is now for the Buccaneers, who enter the weekend 4-11 in Big South play. CSU (19-20) is tied for fifth in the South Division with Asheville (11-26, 4-11). Both teams trail Presbyterian (5-10) by a game. The Bucs face Asheville this weekend, followed by PC in early May, and division-leader Winthrop (9-6) in their next three conference series, with a chance to help their own cause.

The Bucs hope their midweek pitching effort will carry over to the weekend in what are expected to be unfriendly baseball conditions. Cold temperatures are expected for Thursday and Friday night games.

Junior Bobby Ison is the reigning Big South Player of the Week after going 7-for-10 against Gardner-Webb last weekend. He is second in the Big South with a .404 average and is 12 for his last 24 with six-straight multi-hit games. He scored the Bucs' first two runs against South Carolina and hit home runs in his first two at-bats in Saturday's loss to Gardner-Webb last week. His 65 hits is among the nation's best after midweek games.

BUC Records Watch: Senior Alex Tomasovich has 59 hits on the season and needs 12 this to become the Buccaneers' career hits lead. He has 232 for his career, shy of CSU's career record of 244 set by Jordan Haar in 2005…Junior Bobby Ison is on pace to break his own single-season hits record he set last season of 84 (tied with Brantley Meier, 2010). Ison has 65 hits and leads the Big South…Closer Austin Weekley has seven saves, one shy of the CSU single-season records. He had eight last season to tie Payton Tweddale (2007)….

Scouting the Bulldogs: UNC Asheville took 2-of-3 from Gardner-Webb for its only conference series win, and also beat Coastal Carolina and Winthrop in Big South action….Centerfielder Tanner Bush leads the Bulldogs with a .371 average in 18 starts…Right fielder Phillip Treadwell has a team-high 41 hits and a .285 average…Asheville has struggled late in games and has been outscored 85-43 in the final three innings of games.
