CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern improved to 2-0 in Big South Conference play on Saturday afternoon, topping visiting Radford University 7-0 at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex as the Buccaneers swept all three doubles matches and all six singles matches against the Highlanders.
CSU improves to 6-3, 2-0 in Big South play on the year with the victory as junior Yvonne Hubler clinched the match for the Buccaneers on court no. 2, topping Gemma Valls in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 to seal Charleston Southern's fifth consecutive win.
Marketa Placha and reigning Big South Freshman of the Week Nicolin Luecke opened match play with a dominant 8-1 victory over Taylor Fay and Gisela Garcia on court no. 3, and Alexandra Walters and Hubler clinched the doubles point minutes later with an 8-0 win over Taylor Newman and Valls on court no. 1. Alia Nour and Mi'Kola Cooper finished off the CSU sweep with a hard-fought 8-7 (7-4) win on court no. 2 over Meg Napolitano and Grace Sarver.
In singles action, Placha was the first on the board for CSU, topping Newman on court no. 1, 6-1, 6-0. Nour, the reigning Big South Player of the Week, finished second in singles play in topping Garcia on court no. 5, 6-1, 6-1. Hubler followed soon after with the 6-4, 6-2 victory over Valls on court no. 2, sealing the CSU victory.
Cooper topped Sara Andrade 6-3, 6-1 on court no. 6 and Luecke swept past Sarver in straight sets 6-4, 6-1, before Walters closed out the afternoon action. The senior Buccaneer topped her opponent in a tough three-set match, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 to close out the afternoon.
Charleston Southern remains at home as the Buccaneers take on Southern Mississippi on Monday afternoon. Doubles action at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex is set for 2 p.m.
